Usually I blank this sort of thing but on this occasion - acknowledgement of the passing of an iconic influence is appropriate. RIP

A man with a very complex past, but a great statesman of our time. Very sad.

I don't think I'll ever forget the footage of his release. A man who taught us that forgiveness and reconciliation are better than revenge, recrimination and conflict. A lesson we continue to ignore. The world is a slightly worse place for his loss. If ever I wanted to believe there was a paradise after life that some people deserved to inhabit, it would be now. RIP Madiba. 🙁

A man who truly understood forgiveness and reconciliation.

Shame we won't see many of his like again.

His forgiveness and humility will be unsurpassed. Having seen his cell on Robben Island, it's hard to imagine how someone would not be bitter after 27 years of incarceration. RIP Mandiba.

(not often that the Beeb get caught looking so unprepared. At least the guy in J'burg is pulling it togehter now)

Hats off to the chap.

Sort of glad his suffering is over though.

Respect.

His (and my own) favourite poem.

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

William Ernest Henley

RIP.

A man who understood humanity and humility. The main recurring theme when I read about him is his instinct for people and what makes them tick. Very difficult to match that natural ability with a wider sense of purpose. He did.

We are unlikely to see his like again any time soon.

Long Walk should be a set text in all secondary schools.

A mate of mine was working in the kitchens of a very posh do, where assembled dignatories were being visited by Nelson Mandella. They were all craning their necks out of the kitchen to see him arrive. When he did, he spotted them, and headed over, introduced himself, shook all their hands, and stood chatting to them, leaving the great and the good stood twiddling their thumbs waiting for him to finish talking to 'the staff'

Tells you everything you need to know about the great man

RIP. A sad day!

I met him.

Much like Binners describes. He was staying in the hotel we were at, and came down to the bar to meet everyone.

It sounds a bit lame to say people have an aura or presence that can fill a room, but he genuinely did.

Do I feel sad about his death? He lived to a ripe old age and will be remembered throughout history for the great man that he was. A little sadness, but mostly respect.

Hamba kahle Madiba.

RIP Mr Mandela..

One of the first times I actually took notice of the news was his release from prison, a true inspiration.

Sleep well.

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

Quite.

I first learned the name Nelson Mandela when I was 9 or 10, and my father explained to me why Glasgow had just changed the address of the South African Consulate to Nelson Mandela Place. That tickled me then, it still amuses me now.

RIP Madiba.

If I could condense everything written above into a short pithy epithet to praise Mandela's life and legacy I would. Unfortunately for me I'm not able to. I might show this thread in assembly tomorrow morning though.

May he Rest in Peace.
