no age - what impact he made.
Did see him on BT's rugby show the other week and he did not seem so good then.

He has been ill for a long time (since before he stopped playing) so it's not surprising news, but still very sad.

I met him in Dublin when he was at the height of his fame and he came across as an incredibly humble, nice guy. Posing for pics with kids and chatting way above what you would have expected. RIP.

Very sad news, I heard an interview with him where he said that he was never at 100% when playing due to dialysis.

A great player will be missed.

What a shame; I knew he had life long health issues and he was going through a particularly rough patch but it still comes as a shock. Quite literally a game changer in all senses. RIP.

A great shame.

Watching him play was like the future had arrived with its boots and fancied a game. Extraordinary and an extraordinary legacy he has left.

Jonah led a transformation in what we thought players could do. I was lucky enough to meet him on a few occasions and he was a very humble & genuine guy. His health was incredibly poor in recent years after his kidney transplant but he worked hard to not limit him and the family. Kia Kaha, gone way too soon.

I remember seeing his waxwork and realising the difference in size between normal human beings and international rugby players.

Sad day

There's a pic of him arriving at the airport on Tuesday evening looking completely normal, pushing his luggage.....next morning he's dead! Awful.... and leaving two young kids too. 🙁

RIP. What an extra ordinary player a true giant if the game struck down by disease.

Joost is very ill too, two outstanding players of that era who'll not live to see old age

" I heard an interview with him where he said that he was never at 100% when playing due to dialysis."

Blimey! I bet some opposing players were glad he never got to full 100%!!!

what a phenomenal player and a true gentle giant!! the first global superstar of rugby. i remember watching that game against England in 1995 and just being in awestruck at the sight of him almost single handedly destroying the England side. oh how he made me laugh when he flattened Mike Catt!!
there will never be another like him.
RIP big guy.

😕 Thoughts for his family.

He was a real inspiration - at the time it felt rugby was not 'cool' and he just seemed to light things up and up the game to another level professionally and in enjoyment.

Just saw Geraint Thomas post this

Jonah Lomu's college Athletic records. 1989. A giant amongst men. Rest in Peace Jonah. Thoughts and prayers with your family

Never a big fan of rugby and would struggle to name more than half a dozen players of any nationality, but I remember watching Lomu and knowing that i was seeing someone very special.
Great player, a loss to [s]the[/s] sport.

Speaking to one of my colleagues - a Kiwi - about his death earlier. Colleague responds: "Yeah, he went to the high school near mine. I used to play against him."

oh how he made me laugh when he flattened Mike Catt!!

BOOOOM!

[img] [/img]

I think that was the same game where they interviewed Will Carling afterwards and said "So what about that Lomu eh?", he answered "He's a freak and the sooner he goes away the better" 😆 (was that the same one where instead of tackling Rory Underwood he just picked him and threw him overarm off the pitch?)

I'm not much of a rugby fan, but this guy made me watch it when he appeared in the world game. Awesome player, very sad news. No big ego, just seemed a decent bloke.

From Bill McLaren
“It’s like trying to tackle a snooker table!”

“Now I’m not a hod man, but if I saw Jonah Lomu running at me I’d be putting down bricks, I’ll tell you.”

It's all been said above really.
RIP

Watching all the youtube videos, truly awesome. Loads of knocking people over but also ridiculous speed and great stepping.

A shoe in for any all time rugby XV.

No age is it? Terrible news.

The number of times you saw him bat off one, two, then three, four and five players while still driving forwards was remarkable, a real game changing player. Will be sorely missed 🙁

Wow, that's a shocker. Didnt he present the trophy at the end of the Rugby Championship this year? He looked in fairly good nick.
Hope he got to enjoy watching the All Blacks' awesome display in the World Cup before he went.
RIP Jonah, truly befitting the overused word: Awesome.

The thing that stood out for me was his balance when running, very unusual, certainly a mould breaking player, whose light burnt out too quickly.

Joost is very ill too

Tinus Linee too, maladie de Charcot apparently. that's 2/15 of the world cup winning team with a disease that affects <10/100 000. In the same team there's been a death from brain cancer and André Ventner has a disease that affects his spinal cord. 4/15.

Maladie de Charcot - had to google that & was surprised it translates,as CMT, which I have. Personally speaking its never really held me back apart from an inability to run & being a bit clumsy, it comes as a shock to remember how bad it can actually be - its not something I like to think about.

RIP Jonah.

Really moved by the number of tributes and postings by youngsters from our rugby club about Jonah. Most of them weren't born when he was at his peak.

It's going to be a long time getting used to this loss. Such fantastic tributes to a truly incredible player and person - Rest Easy Sir and thank you for the memories!
Jonah Lomu, proving the fact that the shortest distance between two points on a rugby pitch is indeed a straight line...

Mike Catt said after he had been steam rollered one of the Kiwi players came up to him and said "There is more of that to come" 😆

Seeing Joost now makes my blood run cold, life can be so cruel sometimes.
