Has died aged 100. Probably one of the more honest of politicians.

Blimey.....

Over the years, he beat back a series of health crises, including a bout with the skin cancer melanoma, which spread to his liver and brain, and repeated falls, one giving him a broken hip.

Mr. Carter’s death sets the stage for the first presidential funeral since that of George H.W. Bush in 2018. Such occasions traditionally prompt a cease-fire in America’s fractious political wars as the nation’s leaders pause to remember and bid farewell to one of their own.

I suspect with Trump in the Whitehouse that particular tradition might go out of the window. Some crass political point scoring sounds more likely.

A bit of a mixed bag as a president but a thoroughly decent person by all accounts  RIP  President Carter

It came out this year that the rumours that the Reagan campaign messaged the Iranians who were close to releasing the hostages that if they hung on to them until after the inauguration the Republican administration would give them a better deal than they had agreed with the Carter administration for their immediate release were true.
That may not have swung the election but it would certainly have changed history’s view of him.

I remember him coming to Newcastle when I was a child. He had an impressive career pre and post office as well.

A bit of a mixed bag as a president

The embodiment of public service, many of today's "public servants" would do well to look and follow his example.

And as as a final act in a long life he'll be responsible for flags across the country being flown at half mast for Trump's inauguration. I hope that would have made him smile.
