One of those 'lefty' comedians who could still see both sides of an argument and be funny about pretty much anything.
What a shame - he was on Twitter recently refuting that he was ill after some ill-advised tweets.
Didn't always agree with his politics but he was very funny.
what..?
poobumbottom
Oh shit.
Damn.
No way! That's really, really sad.
We saw him live last year, he was great.
RIP
What a shame, shall miss his beautiful voice
57.
don't put stuff off.
Just read that, very sad. I loved his cutting wit.
Very sad, very funny man
#****cancer
A bit lefty even for me but he's given me a fair few chuckles over the years on Radio 4.
Seemed a genuinely nice man and the people he performed with clearly held him in very high regard, 57 is no age, RIP.
Bugger
What?!
🙁
been a fan of his work since the late eighties. bugger.
He was one of my favourite comedians, always looked forward to his appearances on the News Quiz.
RIP Jeremy Hardy.
Ah, that's rubbish. Superbly funny guy
Yeah, I liked him too. RIP.
a real shame, RIP. 57. fills me with dread and I'm 37.
That's crap. He was one of the good guys.
Sometimes his material was just a political statement without any attempt to attach a joke - I didn't like that. In spite of that he was utterly brilliant, one of the panel show performers I enjoyed most and never tired of listening to him. Could take a joke as well.
"Speaks to the Nation" was good too.
Quite shocked, I saw the title and thought "Must be another Jeremy Hardy". Sadly not.
RIP.
Wondering if Hamish and Dougal will get the Lairds estate
Huge, huge shame.
Think he mellowed a bit as he got older and found a much wider and appreciative audience as a result.
His sing-alongs on Clue should be immortalised in the comedy vault of fame (and probably left there) 😉
Great loss to us all.
His comment “Not shouting at your kids is God’s way of telling you you’re not spending enough time with them” has got me through the first twelve years of parenting.
His politics were pretty clear and not to everyone’s taste but he came across as a really humane nice person

Blimey, I can't imagine what he was like earlier in his career then.
I saw him about 2 years ago and the show was pretty much two hours of slagging off Daily Mail readers. But not in a funny way, there were no laughs. More like he was just genuinely cross.
One of his jokes that stuck with me;
If that flash car was really a penis substitute he'd spend all day driving it in and out of the garage.
Just heard this, sad news. I'll genuinely miss his contributions on the News Quiz & Clue. Had the opportunity to see him last year but couldn't make it due to work. Guess I never will now. 🙁
Very sad news.
He was one of my favourite comedians, always looked forward to his appearances on the News Quiz.
This^
I saw him doing standup in Cov 25 years ago, talking about how without immigrants you would be going to the liver and onions takeaway in the early hours after a night out. A very funny man, and I'm glad he stayed angry and kept poking the Daily Mail readers.
"We will now stand and sing The Red Flag to the tune of Abide With Me - badly"
RIP
Very sad news especially as his great friend Linda Smith went the same way.
They were both in in a Brief History of Timewasting on R4.
Hardy’s fellow comedian and close friend Mark Steel also paid tribute. “My dearest friend Jeremy Hardy left us early this morning,” he wrote. “I was so lucky to have spent 35 years arsing about with him. Knowing him as I did, I know he wouldn’t want you to be sad, he’d want you to be bloody devastated.”
I'll miss him on the News Quiz. The voice of the program for me.
“We will now stand and sing The Red Flag to the tune of Abide With Me
Very good

No, they should be recorded on vinyl, so that Samantha can reminisce about the archives in the basement, and the time she went down and got his 7 incher out for some aural pleasuring.
saw him live a couple of years ago, he genuinely missed his train home because he was talking too much in the bar to us after the show. very funny and yet still one of us ordinary people. 57, blimey i need to go and buy the bike i've been agonising over now before it's too late
A very funny chap indeed. Will miss his humour.
This is perfect. He'll be missed.
Generally when famous people die (even if I was a fan of their work) I think "Well it's sad but I didn't personally know him/her, and let's be honest, millions of folk die every day".
However every now and again someone dies that makes me genuinely sad and today was one of those days. I saw him live a few times, and heard him loads on Radio 4, and every time he came across as genuinely a decent bloke as well as very, very funny. His routine about being arrested at a demonstration in Israel cracks me up every time I hear it.
Coincidentally (or maybe not) one of the other "celebrity" deaths that really got to me was Linda Smith. I've got a few old tapes of A Brief History of Timewasting and Speaks to the Nation; I think I'll dig them out tonight and have a glass or two in memory of two warm and wonderful talents.
Yeah, I thought of Linda Smith too when I heard about this.
Real shame.

My thoughts exactly. Man, he was superb on The News Quiz. Sandy Toksvig wrote this today and I thought it was just lovely:
