Died from hyporthermia after capsizing in his Kayak in Pategonia. 72 years old and out there on an adventure. As it says on the T-shirts;

The flags will be at half mast in Croxteth today.
If you have to go (and we all do) it seems like a better way than many, doing something it appears he loved and gave 50 plus years of his life to.
72, still exploring, nice one.
Such a shame but as above, better than the view from a nursing home! Although I always remember a talk by Alan Hinkes saying that there is nothing romantic about dying doing what you love, your still dying!
aye, too quick to go but hats off to him.

I'd rather die doing something that I love than sitting in an old persons internment camp eating pills I have no idea what they are for.
Met Doug Thompkins once when I worked in an outdoor shop tied with North Face. Inspirational guy, unsurprisingly grounded too. TNF are one of the few outdoor brands that managed to reinvent themselves several times after they lost track of what they were about.
Wonder if I have any of our old Esprit kit left? May go dig it out to check.

There's certainly nothing romantic about losing a fight to the death with a chapatti like he nearly did 🙂
Sad news indeed. Despite the public image of TNF as a corporate it seems that Doug and Yvon Chouinard? were doing some great work.
Anyone with an interest in ethical business and the outdoors should watch the film '180° South' and read the book 'Let My People Go Surfing'.
