I'd always guessed she was a real person, as many of Pulp's songs are retellings of real events, but I didn't know the story behind this one. She has recently died after nearly a year's fight with bone cancer.

She'd grown up and become a leading light in children's mental health and would have collected an MBE for her work in the NY honours. Jarvis and his mum went to her 50th birthday party and reportedly joined the band for a rendition of Disco 2000.
Anyway, kinda nice story, albeit with a sad ending. She sounded like a thoroughly decent human being.
Indeed, one of the first Pulp songs I ever heard too. RIP.
See the linked story about Candida's arthristis?
Which one was that DebZ?
EDIT: Just reading it now...

Lovely back story which I'd not heard before. Seems a tragically young age for a very decent person.
