Queen's Guide to Morecambe Bay sands dies:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-59354012

Has anyone walked the sands, either with Cedric or his successor?
Or better still, ridden it? It is a BOAT, after all.

Yeah done it quite a few times with Cedric also with another guide. It's a brilliant walk. Wouldn't even think about riding it, what with the quick sand and the river crossings. You'd only going walking pace with the guide anyway.
Rip Cedric. Certaninly kept you fit.

That's sad but he was 88, I have done the cross bay walk a few times, last time about 5 years ago Cedric was training his successor. His wife Olive died v recently.

I m pretty sure in an interview I heard him say he had only left the area once when he went to London to collect his mbe.

They used to live in kents bank, apparently lots of people used to knock on his door to ask about the tides. Cedric used to plan the walking route by putting branches on the sands, the rivers flowing into the bay kept moving the sands.

RIP. I've done the walk with Cedric Robinson, it was a great experience. Nice to walk a good distance barefoot also.

He was pretty grumpy/scathing about someone else who was doing guided walks - no idea how justified that was.

The idea of riding a fatbike on the sands is tempting but you'd be going too quickly into the really sticky mud/quicksand I would think. Advice I got from a coastguard safety liaison person was you can go out on the sands without a guide but learn to spot quicksand and if you do just turn around and go home.

Mrs NBT and i did the walk in 2019, Cedric was in the tractor and the new guide was leading us. A very enjoyable day out, well worth trying if you're in the area but book in advance, i think all the 2021 walks were booked by April

RIP, proper character.

Used to see him a fair bit as a kid when out shrimping with my grandad

Yes grum the Cedric imposter was starting from hestbank but didn't last long as the longer route is more dangerous. Cedric s route is really a cross estuary walk, not a cross bay. He was famously grumpy, someone asked if he really earned 15 quid a year for the job, he did get a tied house though.

It was a radio 4 travel show I heard the Cedric interview, maybe excess baggage.

I did it in barefoot too, the waters freezing and sand hard.

As nbt says we did it a couple of summers ago barefoot too.
The water in some of the deeper sections was warm enough and some of the children were swimming in these pools.
Such an amazing experience and Cedric certainly passed on his skills to a good young chap.

RIP Cedric.

Anyone ever staged a quicksand escape? Guy trapped in the first vid needs three strong men and specialised equipment to get him out, French woman below just needs a calm head and the right technique. I suppose the sand qualities can be very different.

Awful audio on this one:
