I get all my news from memes, but even I have heard about a rising tide of populism/far right politics in Ireland, a moral panic about scrote crime (often against immigrant food delivery workers, their bikes and motorbikes), an uptick in xenophobia, and unbelievable cost of living crisis.
Now it seems like an immigrant Irish citizen attacked children at a school with a knife, and a coalition of neds and Nazis is rioting through the centre of Dublin. Not all is well in our Celtic neighbour.
There is a difficult and uncomfortable truth about this too.
There are two elements in Ireland, here and many other countries that genuinely relish an event like this occurring, let alone an actual terrorist attack. Hint, some of those support terrorism yes but just as insidious, if not more so, are those that seek to exploit said events even whilst exhibiting faux rage. The latter group is far more widely spread and even controls some of the reigns of power in some countries.
It's a deeply uncomfortable truth.
Hmm, people see illegal immigrants getting housed, fed and clothed, when they themselves cannot afford to either buy or rent in Dublin. It’s not just Dublin, it’s Europe wide. A violent attack confirms their bias. Go out and protest. Loonies turn up and it turns violent.
Not saying it’s right, just that’s what some people think.
I heard about a stabbing outside a school and immediately thought "domestic violence" and/or "mental health".
It shows how the wider political narrative gives poison the chance to spread. All countries have immigrant populations, governments need to start promoting the correct policies and attitudes or this kind of shit will get more common and ultimately, more deadly.

Not sure about that tbh - not that them being "illegal" or otherwise would justify any of this, but I've not seen owt to suggest there's much illegal migration to Ireland. Frankly the sheer number of asylum seekers' tents on the streets of Dublin, waiting for their applications to just be processed, rather puts the lie to the idea that illegal immigrants are getting a golden handshake.
Plus employment levels are pretty high. The housing market is nuts, exacerbated by the banks being a complete oligopoly and not supporting greater mortgage lending, but that's the same everywhere.
Anti-immigrant sentiment has been bubbling a bit, but seeing it kick off like this is a real shocker. OTOH, the London riots sparked from a single police killing and cut a swathe across London, so I guess it only needs a single spark, if people are pissed off enough.
So all the statements are about an organised and emergent far right. Whereas most of the above and video looks like disaffected youth. What is the truth here?
From whatever one can tell from video clips, it does seem like neds spontaneously breaking into sports shops. The timeframe seems too short for organised violence - but maybe I'm naïve.

The guy had an Irish passport and has lived there for 20 years. It was just an excuse for the right to riot and others join to get their Christmas shopping.
I think a very small number of far right took advantage of the situation to stage a "protest", but once this sort of thing kicks off, anybody interested in a bit of hooliganism joins in. It never would have escalated the way it did if the original incident wasn't in such a central and deprived area.

I don't know what asylum seekers' state-provided accommodation in Dublin is like, but I've been to a couple in London, and it's fair to describe it as "not luxurious". And if there's not enough decent, affordable housing in London or Dublin, it's not because someone from Syria or Albania or Senegal has grabbed it all.

I assume the media there pushes the same stories about asylum seekers being put up in 4 star hotels with lots of publicity photos skipping over a)those photos are likely pretty old and b)that was before they got reconfigured with home office approved furniture for block booking.
It doesn't look good does it.
Also what kind of sick person goes around stabbing small children. Let's hope they make a full recovery.

Actually the media doesn't push much of that in Ireland - there isn't really mainstream rightwing press, or elected politicians. More Facebook groups and agitators who have support from UK an elsewhere spreading misinformation.
Don't forget Conar McGregor's influence in driving up hatred against the immigrant community in Ireland, he can maybe throw a punch or kick but the guy's mentality is mush for brains.
Conar McGregor
I think he has accusations of violent sexual assaults leveled at him, and a total of 18 other criminal convictions. Hardly the saintly type.
That Irish Times article is disturbing.
