Shit. That's sad. Proper comedy legend of my generation.
WHAT
I didn't see that coming. WTF/How?
I grew up watching him. From a small spotty child who didn't quite grasp the adult-edge on some of the jokes, to totally getting it.
****ing shit.
shit news
😥
Terrible news. Someone I feel that I grew up with. Always hoped that we'd see him again in a whatever happened to the young ones.
Sad news indeed...
Well thats a shocker.
As above, grew up with his stuff on the telly.
Oh my f-ing Lord.
That is a shock and an absolute shame.
😥
🙁
Sudden death usually = heart attack/stroke/haemorraghe
Really sad, RIP
What awful news, always made me laugh, did he have any kids?
I'll be digging out the Bottom box sets this evening.
I remember thinking Guest Paradiso is lame...until the Kitchen Fight scene. I think I almost wet myself laughing.
I'm going to start with his appearances in Black Adder 🙂I'll be digging out the Bottom box sets this evening.
Very sad really funny bloke. RIP.
Woa that's a bit of a shock, he wasn't that old. Had a bit of a nasty accident not long ago though..
He'll be missed I bet. terrible news
Just heard on the news......bit speechless
The 4 wheel garden thingy that turned over on him?Had a bit of a nasty accident
Yes, he is a funny man.
Funnier than Eddy what his name and many so called jokers.
RIP.
🙁
Oh no. That is bloody dreadful news.
Gosh he was a a brilliant comic actor.
Genuinely gutted.
And such a shock.
RIP Rik.
Oh shit!!
Absolutely gutted, far too young 🙁
Just seen it on the BBC. cant believe it. Such a great actor of my era of growing up. Thoughts to his wife and family and lots of friends 🙁
So many classic characters
Sh!t the bed! 🙁 +1 for the "someone I grew up with" sentiment. I still chuckle running through the scene with the line "crop rotation in the fourteenth century..."
Man oh man. 🙁
Flash by name, flash by nature. woooof!
🙁
Sorry for the other thread, awful news, the Young Ones was the first show that I considered mine when growing up. My parents hated it 😆
The Black Adder parts and the New Statesman were so good.
RIP
And the grown-ups will say "But why are the kids crying?"
And the kids will say "Haven't you heard? Rik is dead! The People's Poet is dead!"
RIP, sir. Shocking.
He made me laugh many, many times. What sad news. The appearances in Blackadder were very good 🙁
Nooooooo!! He was only 56!!!
Absolutely grew up with the young ones and my mum took me to see him live when I was a kid and he was appearing as Kevin Turvey. Absolutely gutted!!!
This news has made me properly sad. Gone far too soon, sure he still had much to give.
RIP Rik
Catflap was his best stuff. He was brilliant at being a hilarious cockend.
Only 56, eek.
Comedian I grew up with from "Kevin Turvey's ear" to later Blackadder.
Sad loss to British comedy.
Bye Rik, you utter, utter bastard!
Bit of a shock, always made me laugh.
Condolences to his friends and family.
Sad news indeed. Like many here a big part my youth. Had the good fortune to see him live on stage with Stephen Fry (just before he had his episode and walked out) Talented man.
@roger - top post in sad circumstances, you catch the mood perfectly.
Bad News.
Very sad news. RIP
Wow, shocked by that.
RIP
Bit of a shock, only 56?
RIP
As he would say, "Bloody Hell!"
RIP.
**** that's a shock, like others I grew up with his comedy.
Comic Strip being my fave. Off to pick the in-laws from the airport so its going to have to be the CF part in Blackadder on the player in the car.
Hey Hey BAD NEWS.
RIP sir.
(Alan b'stard)
There's so many to chose when you think of it, from his Jackanory reading george's marvelous medicine to Mr Jolly, and so on.
For those of you who haven't had the pleasure, one of his best characters and definitely worth checking out is Colin Grigson on the Bad News soundtrack album- way funnier than the film....
😥
yours,
DenDennis
RIP. Will also be doing a bit of Bottom marathon on netflix tonight I think. Always used to love watching it with my parents!
***SWEARY CONTENT WARNING**
No way. I watched Bottom Live so many times. Even went to see them live. The Young Ones were Genius too. And Drop Dead Fred...
Just seeing the images in this thread bring a smile to my face.
🙁
hey, hey, any girl who wants to tie herself to my railings and suffer a *jet* movement is more than welcome.
Very sad news 🙁
I grew up watching countless episodes of Bottom. I don't know why but the one that always sticks in my memory is the Xmas episode. Where Eddie makes Vodka margerine and they find the baby Jesus and offer Terrys All Gold, a Frankinstein mask and the aftershave, Grrrr.
Just heard it on the Car Radio at the end of the News so it must have only just come through.
RIP Rik, I didn't really get The Young Ones when I was younger but saw an episode a while ago and its genius.
I best remember him in Bottom but reading this thread makes you realise how much he actually did otherwise.
A true English Actor and Comedian who will be sadly missed.
Bother. Sad news.
Very, very sad.
Drop Dead Fred was my childhood.
Watching Bottom quiet enough not to get caught was my younger Teenage years.
Going to have a lot of laughter in his memory.
Edit: I am laughing just thinking of the camping episode in Bottom....
😯
🙁
Damn, that's a shame. RIP.
Loved most of his work and I still think the funniest thing I've ever seen was the bottom live 2 tour in Liverpool. Absolutely brilliant.
WTF??? I can't quite believe that. Was he even ill?
A huge loss though. The world is a less funny place now.
A genuine loss to comedy 🙁 There are so many things he's done that have genuinely made my stomach hurt from laughing.
RIP
Proper sad.
Gone way too early.
A genius of alternative 80s and 90s comedy, the type of which we probably won't ever see again.
RIP fella
will be sadly missed....gone far to soon! 🙁
'Neil, the bathroom's free. Unlike the country under the Thatcherite junta.' 😆
Love The Young Ones
Sad news
I guess repeatedly getting hit with a frying pan is bad for you after all.
RIP. Far too young.
Proper shocked 🙁
Genius.
Sad news.
A very perceptive guy and beautifully subversive comedy a lot of the time.
The New Statesman in particular just keeps coming true time and time again.
RIP
Well f##k me side ways...no way! Bottom and Young ones were brilliant growing up.
Truly shocked and upset. 🙁
He didn't completely recover from his quad bike crash, all the same very sad.

His twitter account. One tweet. Spot on

/p>
Seems to have been taken down. Fortunately it exists elsewhere...
"Opening my very own Twitter to stop another b'stard from doing it. So f... off & don't expect to hear from me any time soon. Love Rik x"
And that was it (edited by me), all he ever tweeted.
Saw him on the Alan B'Stard tour a few years back. Brilliant. RIP
A brilliant comedian and actor of my generation.
RIP.
So many classic lines from the young ones and bottom that became phrases we used all the time. Bit like Monty Python lines I guess.
Very sad to hear this news.
He was a comic legend.
A very sad day for British comedy 🙁
A brilliant comedian and actor of my generation.
RIP.

What a bloody shame.
Many years ago, I worked with another member of the Blackadder cast. He told me that Mayall, in Flash mode was bordering on impossible to work with. Partly because much of it was ad libbed, but mainly because it was so bloody funny!
A sad loss.
really sad loss,
i like to pretend im a cultured sophisticaed type but for me is still the funniest character ever invented
I don't normally touch alcohol on a Monday night but this evening I'll be having a few in tribute to one of the great comic actors of our age. I was at school when The Young Ones came out. It was complete cult viewing for all in my class. We would spend the next day quoting lines. And the University Challenge episode is still one of the single greatest sit com episodes every made
I also loved Filthy, Rich and Catflap which I reckon is always overlooked for some reason.
A Big lose in Comedy. RIP
