Right, that’s it. After almost dying again at the Weekender XC race, and pretty much can't upgrade my bike anymore to make it lighter...
I'm going to upgrade me, so, lose the stone that I gained 8 years ago when I gave up smoking, permanently.

So whats the best methods ?

Saw it off my belly ?
Weight watchers (or calorie controlled) ?
Riding doesn’t do it on its own, and with young family / work difficult to get to gym (and would rather scratch my eyes out).

Caffeine fuelled morning rides. Take some caffeine pills, go ride at tempo for 2 hours before eating anything. Trains the body to burn fat.

Could probably google for more info.

i've lost 6lbs in two weeks by cutting out my cola and chocolate addiction. forget diets, look at what you consume and what's not good for you and delete.

Loose it over a year, so 6.3Kg / 52 = 122grammes a week.
7700 cals of fat in a kilo
7700 * 0.122 = 940 cals a week extra you need to burn off.
So, run (or walk) 3 x 3 miles a week or drink 5 pints less beer a week.

Some would say yes, some would say no. I would say cut the sugar and go for as much home cooked as possible with lots of veg and chicken, etc.

For me having a goal to work towards has helped. I've lost a stone since Xmas and I'm 1/2 stone lighter than I was this time last year.
Less bread, less cakes/biscuits/puddings, generally eating less and not eating after tea (and not finishing the kids leftovers!) has helped.
Also been riding as much as possible, often on my own, and commute by bike a couple of times a week plus weights at home 3 or 4 times a week.

Basically eat less move more. Simple.

And yeah G&T to replace the beer and wine.

I did weight watchers 10 years ago before our wedding, and it made sense. Its just colorie counting / limiting.

It worked for 3 years, then quit smoking, piled two stone on, then managed to get a stone off that, but even after starting riding seven or so years ago can't lose that last one.

ride more, eat less crap.

Si i am using http://www.fatsecret.co.uk to record what i eat, its a real eye opener. You can set a target weight and calculate how long it will take to get there. It also records exercise.
I have lost about 1/2 a stone just by monitoring what i eat and not snacking.

Typical day now is:
4 weetabix
Banana
Apple

Cup of carrot sticks
cup of Cucumber sticks
tin of mackerel
pitta bread
banana and apple

Pasta or similar
Yoghurt
More fruit

Lost just over a stone over 12 months, no real effort (it could, of course, have been achieved much quicker)
Lost initial lbs mostly through doing the cooking, keeping to the Points plan thing for MrsMM.
Got 'stuck' at 15st 2lbs
So, no beers in the fridge at home (have crept back in recently though).
Lunches - was a fully loaded sandwich, crisps (my downfall - and, not just a normal bag - McCoys = more calories) the the butty shops's homemade cake crept in.
Lunches now - baked beans, slice of toast (no butter) bit of grated cheese.
Crisps = Ringo's or similar 'low cal' option. No more cake / choccy.

Currently 14st 9. 14st is next target.

All that ^ was, of course, the long way of illustrating eat less (and / or better) and move more. 🙂

Really feel the benefit in my riding and it's nice to fit into, as opposed to squeeze into, clothes 🙂

That's why I like MFP. No daft gimmicks it is just honest, classic Calories In < Calories Out

Having it on your phone makes it very easy to record your food (especially as you can scan barcodes) and exercise. And unlike Weigh****chers it is completely free.

I've just lost 18 pounds in 6 weeks, gone from 14:10 to 13:6. Followed Mens Health 6 pack challenge, found it quite easy. Porridge every morning with Blueberries, mainly protein and veg. No dairy, fat or sugar. Brown rice & sweet potato the only carb you can have. 3 litres fluid, green tea which is rank!
Go to the website for menus etc....

Go camping in S France for two or three weeks.
Diet of baguette, wine plus loads of sun and I always come back lighter (14st to 13 and a bit).
Then just have to keep it off - get used to feeling hungry.

The other way that works for me is to cycle 600-1000K per month and eat what you like.

Well if you want to loose it, point it in my direction as I need to put a stone on, for my channel swimm in September. I am failing to put weight on, as on a SEE FOOD AND EAT IT diet, but still training and buring it all off.

haha if we're doing before and afters I just had a look back at some old photos.. **** me I was bad! In the top one I was about 23 stone and a 46" waist, now just under 12 and 32" with a bit more to go (my manboobs are still there a bit, small but perfectly formed 😆 )

..so yeah stop eating loads and do more exercise! I've been to a gym twice since I started and haven't gone on any type of fad diet, just rarely eating takeaway and other rubbish like that.

I've lost 8lb logging what I eat on myfitnesspal, exercising more and including strength/resistance training once a week. I try to stick to 40% carbs, 30% protein, 30% fat, and keep junk food to a minimum - I allow myself one indulgence day a week though!

Why has there been no mention of THE DIET yet? Or is it now old hat?

Riding doesn’t do it on its own, and with young family / work difficult to get to gym (and would rather scratch my eyes out).

Riding alon should do it, of course no matter how much riding you do, if you continue to eat sh!t/too much you will never loose weight. Having said that I find that doing 30 mins 3 to 4 times a week is more beneficial than 1 or 2 2 hour rides.

Of course other methods are going to your local nursery/school and picking up the worst D&V bug you can find, that should see you loose a stone in a week 😆

It's great to hear so many people using MFP or alternative to loose weight.
Could the smartphone inadvertently become a tool in the fight against obesity?

of course no matter how much riding you do, if you continue to eat sh!t/too much you will never loose weight.

Question: I'm commuting regularly - twice a week, 18km each way, so averaging about 72km a week for the past few months.

So if I eat my recommended calorie limit from MyFitnessPal (1950kcals + whatever exercise allows) and keep my "macros" balanced (MFP recommends 55% carb, 30% fat, 15% protein) then is that enough?

I ask cos I am still eating "sh!t" 😳

breakfast today was sausage and egg roll (just sausage when not on bike)
lunch: bacon, brie & cranberry panini from cafe, plus pack of crisps
snack: caramel flapjack
dinner: something vaguely healthy with some meat & veg

I'm still under my limits though. So is that okay?
Or do I need to dive into the full carb-free vegan fruitarian thing?

Seem to be losing weight okay on crap so far.

Graham S - Depends on your definition of Sh!t doesnt it.

Some people eat fried bacon egg sandwiches for breakfast, followed by McD's for lunch followed by a processed microwave meal or curry take away with x pints of larger etc every day. All interspersed with cake and chocolate.

I used to have chocolate snacks in the day time, now I have fruit instead, which actually makes me feel better. I also drink much less than I used to. My weight now remains quite stable without trying, I just have to eat more if I exercise 🙂

MFP is currently top of the Fitness category in App Store. Likewise on Android I believe. Not sure how many users it has but certainly seems incredibly popular.

Likewise a friend of mine, who is quite overweight, has recently got into running, mainly using iPhone apps and in her own words has gone from not being able to run the length of herself to happily doing 3 mile runs. She is currently working towards the 10k mark.

So... maybe.

Yeah. That's why I ask.

Stuff I eat is generally "made", not "processed", but it's not the healthiest. I'm sure I could swap my roll and sausage for a raw lentil bar or whatever the hell thin people eat - but I like my roll and sausage and I'm meeting my targets so is it doing any real harm?

I dunno really, back in the real world, it makes sense to me to eat mostly healthily but not to get so obsessive that you never touch things you enjoy because they're 'bad'. I mostly just ride a lot and eat normally and it works for me. If I tried to follow the weird dietary obsessives on this forum, I suspect I'd lose weight mostly as my brain melted and ran down my nose and out of ears...

I'm really uneasy with all the weight loss obsessing and compulsive exercise stuff on here, it seems really quite unhealthy and actually counter productive in the sense that it implies extreme diets and obsessive training are 'the answer', which is off-putting and triggers stuff like the 'raw lentil bar' comment above.

But maybe I'm just being over sensitive.

Stick your tongue out, brain is low GI.

'The Answer' is to eat sensibly from as many fresh ingredients as possible whilst exercising daily. IMO.

So that's sort of my question: is 1950kcals of lentils, sprouts, tomatoes and cabbage better (in weight loss terms) than 1950kcals of bread roll, sausage, egg, bacon etc (assuming both can hit the same balance of carbs/fat/protein)?

I think the answer, in purely weight loss terms, is no, it won't make any appreciable difference.

But if you only eat processed 'bad' foods you are going to be much hungrier, and maybe have a slight issue with salt intake, etc.

I did do the Dukan diet for a few weeks last year, and yes I did lose some weight, about 20 lbs over course of 6 weeks. The high protein meals really did make you feel full for longer. But it also meant I ate a lot less garbage, crisps, biscuits, etc which I think was the real cause of the weightloss.

Better in weight loss terms... probably not. Better in general terms... certainly.

I also believe you can eat pretty good bread, sausages, bacon and eggs, but it is easier to eat too much of them.

To be honest, I think a lot of it's common sense. For example, I like fishfingers, but I know the breadcrumbs are unhealthy, so I simply strip them off and feed them to my dog, which leaves the fishfinger in a natural, fresh healthy state, just as when it was caught by the fishermen. I've sort of reversed the processing.

Similarly, if I can't get fresh bread, I sometimes buy pain au chocolat and take the chocolate bit out so it's just 'pain', which is French for bread. Same with potatoes, like chicken, throw away the unhealthy, fatty skin and just eat the insides raw..

One thing I do take issue with is the idea that you should exercise daily. I know you guys are experts, but I find if I do that, I get really tired, which is counter productive as your body stores fat to compensate. So mostly I'll take recovery days and eat well then to bulk up for further training.

But like I said, mostly I think it's just common sense and logical thinking. You can eat processed foods, but you need to de-process them sometimes. HTH.
