After 12 years of owning the same [actual] car it's prob time for a change.
Mrs SB and the 3 baitlets (all girls) tell me I should get a white car as they are 'cool'. I, on the other hand, can only remember my mums new white Vauxhall Viva many years ago. I'd rather have a gunmetal grey or something like that.
Not sure whether it makes a difference or not but it's a 'big' car [current car is an XC90] that would attract huge flaming on here and I'd be keeping it at least 3-4 years.
How can I persuade them that I'm right and they're wrong (other than it's my money and my choice)?
Recession white.
I've got two white cars. I like white cars 🙂
Yep, but you have to de-chrome it and paint the wheels black 😉
I've head two. Never again. ALWAYS filthy. It always reminds me of commercial vehicles as well.....
EDIT
That said, ANYTHING Is better than the silver/grey/lookslikesilverorgrey modern disease.
Because I'm a cheapskate who didn't want to pay for an AC (and the running cost) I chose white.
My first three were white. When it was not cool.
Since then I've had red, silver, black, black, blue and am about to get another black one.
They all show the dirt but freshly cleaned black looks best IMHO
With the possible exception of Ford, I think White is one of the few colours that don't cost extra new
White is the new cool. I like!
😀
When I bought my Audi 80 Coupe back in the day, white was the cheapest colour. Quite trendy now it's been the colour of choice in adverts.
As PP says though, at least it wasn't grey like my Mondeo. But that'll be gone on Friday ... for a big black car.
I'm going for white next, partly because I reckon (which is sufficient evidence) that it's the best at hiding scratches, but mostly because it shouldn't end up with the impossible to remove sunscreen based children's hand prints that my current car has all over it.
It's also, apparently, the safest colour. Apparently.
We have two white ones, I think both look cool. A pearlescent Peugeot 308 cc and a Fiat 500
White = Chav
Stand out from the sheep and get something different
That said, ANYTHING Is better than the silver/grey/lookslikesilverorgrey modern disease.
This.
Sadly I drive a Tarmac grey car. Secondhand history and the right car trumps colour. 😐
My friends have a word for white cars. Much like Apple White, or Almond White, only it's named after a lady's part beginning with C.
White fiesta metal here, black wheels and a big spoiler, mountune exhaust. Almost chav like, but I love it! Actually my wife chose it!
White's a bit... erm... Essex, no?
Just ordered mine in gun metal grey (only cos the wife said we can't have 2 black cars)
Forgetting for a minute that most STW'ers hate my vehicles....
Old white 'big 4X4'
Current gunmetal 'big 4x4'

White = Chav
That "chav" label is sooo 2011. 😉
White can actually be quite pleasant as a car colour. Yes, my current wheeled-jobbie is white, but all I can advise is that it's a bastard to keep clean. It does stop you from accidentally brushing against the car in your car, when you realise what crap is on there after 100miles.
I sit in inside lane at 70, only overtaking when needed to overtake an eco-twit driving at 56mph. The chavs presently are weaving into the inside lane when they've slowed down, no matter what colour their car is, or make.
About 5 years too late to be cool with a white car.
I was told that White is the thinnest paint so avoid.....
Just saying.
White Octavia Estate (company car), so I'm very STW
It's constantly dirty from M62 grime but I've found the solution, just don't bother washing it.
I've always wanted a white car.
The Golf GT I bought in October is white.
It looks brill - though very dirty - got the M1 to thank for that.
I was told by a work colleague that white wasn't cool anymore before I bought it.
I told him I couldn't give a shit.
The only colours I wouldn't have had are silver (dull and 10 a penny) and red (just crap).
That said, ANYTHING Is better than the silver/grey/lookslikesilverorgrey modern disease
Aww rats..... black then! Although I might not have a choice as I'm buying used and there's not a massive choice.
My Fiesta is white and the last one was.
I love cleaning Cars so I chose that colour 😉
But seriously it could do with a wash every Day at this time of year. I'm doing about 120 miles a Day and by that time is filthy.
It's a lease Car so White is easy to get scratches out of and to make look decent when it goes back. That for me wins everytime over the pearlescent brown / black Fiesta I had a while back that scratched if you looked at it.....
Very popular in Cheshire 😉
Yes I have a 'chav' white car. I have always liked white cars (perhaps from having a poster of a white Testerossa as a boy) and since work are changing it every 18 months i thought why not, it's not like I have to keep it. It's turned grime grey over winter, that's why not.
...and I live in Cheshire...
...and it's a BMW...
I was told that White is the thinnest paint so avoid.....
I was told the opposite - a colleague visited the Vauxhall factory and was told (and saw) that the metal shows through the white and so all white cars go through the paint shop twice, so have thicker paint and better protection. He was also told that all manufacturers do this. But it's all hearsay so could be totally wrong.
Grey and silver are a bit common and very 2000s.
The wotld has moved on.
My next car will have Carwrap Glow in the Dark like this so you should better see me coming and give way ... 😆
edit: grey is the ugliest of all colours in such dull weather ...
Caring what colour your car is automatically makes it uncool.
It does stop you from accidentally brushing against the car in your [s]car[/s] suit
Just to correct my typo 🙂
Anyhow, it's just a colour choice people. It's how you behave on the road that really matters. 😉

I like glow in the dark colour because there many who drive blind day or night so I rather they see me than be cool or uncool. 😀
I am too cool to be uncool and to uncool to be cool ... (all of you may quote me on that ...)
I buy silver cars just because I know it winds up PP 😉
buy the colour you like or otherwise if you really don't care, like me, just buy what's easy to sell on. White as stated above is a bit old hat now I reckon.
Caring what colour your car is automatically makes it uncool.
Attempting to be cool by pretending you don't care about being cool isn't really that cool either
White cars don't show the dirt as much as most other colours - when I worked for an aggregate company those who worked at the quarries had to have white company cars. PR for local residents so we didn't have dirty looking vehicles.
Mines white but it's a van is that a double chav or does one cancel out the other?
Attempting to be cool by pretending you don't care about being cool isn't really that cool either
My car history is a pretty good demonstration that I really don't give a crap about being cool! The last car I bought (in 2014) was a 1.3 Peugeot 309 (in red, not sure if that makes it cool), my wife drives a Dacia and I'm seriously considering a Toyota Auris estate as my next company car.
my last couple of cars have been white, new one will be black because it's a no cost, option unlike white now it's cool. I bought white because: it was cheaper, "looks" cleaner for longer & hides the scratches better.
Big difference between modern white cars and the old white on cars such as the Early 90 fiestas and escorts.
I like having a white car, I can see the dirt on it so I know when to get it cleaned
TAFKASTR, do they not do those trucks in yellow? I think you're a yellow car kinda guy. 🙂
Oh, that's noice.
Mine is white because it was the most visible colour that came at no extra cost. I do a lot of miles so anything that reduces the chance of some nugget trying to kill me has to be a good thing.
White is the new cool. I like!
+1
I used to hate white, but that was because fleet lease/cheap cars had thin cheap single stage white paint... I now really like the pearlescent white that you see.
Best car colour I've seen recently was a machine grey Subaru XV that almost rendered matt. I though it was a factory colour, but I cant find any pictures on t'internet.
Not had a white car since my dad's Austin Rover Montego. what a heap of junk that was.
Currently in a boring grey, invisibility cloaked Volvo.
my white car is now covered in about 4-5 inches of snow
do I win a prize?
I live in Surrey and see a lot of white cars. I'm still undecided about the colour as it can look great on the right car, but one car I've decided its ALL wrong on... is the Range Rover/RR sport. Just wrong!
Therefore first rule is 'not on a large car'.
White = Chav
I think, statistically, white cars = middle aged middle management
My current Yeti is white because I bought it off the showroom floor, and that was the colour of the demo one they wanted to shift. My new one goes by the brilliantly imaginative name of 'silver metallic silver'. So it appears I've managed to be uncool twice in a row.
I like it when it's clean. It's not clean very often. The Yeti colours for this year were pretty horrible, there was a squirrel shit brown, some kind of 'has it got a disease' green and a blue that somehow managed to look shiny and matt at the same time.
and a blue that somehow managed to look shiny and matt at the same time.
Ah yes, Shat Blue.
@matt - I've seen one of the sparkly Mercs parked outside Harrods, it does make you smile in a sort of "OMG that's shhiiite" short of way
OP my mate had a white car, he claims he loved it but his new one is now metallic blue. It did look ok as he was fastidious about keeping it clean. IMO white is colour for warmer climates and less muddy/dirty roads.
White is very popular with certain buyer demographics in West London, just saying.
I have one white vehicle but it's a van, and white never goes out of fashion for vans.
White might be oh so on-trend for cars right now but it won't be in 4-5 years time when you want to sell it. The market will be awash with white cars and everyone will clamour for something awful like green or yellow.
Personally I like silver cars (bite me), but IMO a big lump like an XC90 works better with a dark colour so I'd say black or dark shade of blue or grey.
A white car is much better for being visible on the road. Grey and silver cars just disappear in dull grey weather.
And IMO Black shows dirt much more than a White car.
.... I should add that another thing that's putting me off a white car is that my SIL has a white X5 and so I REALLY don't want to go down that route.
[BIL is an estate agent.... what can I say!)
White cars don't show the dirt as much as most other colours
No, I'm not having that!
The only colour criteria I apply is NOT white and NOT black, thankyou.
The best I've had so far is dark metalic gunmetal grey. I washed my last Mundane-o quite religeously (every other Easter, or 40k miles maybe) and it still looked clean/new at 160k.
Whereas my new (dark blue) Mundane-o looks mucky already and I've only done about 6k miles in it since October!
Sounds like you'll be keeping it a while. Brand new out of the showroom with a foot thickness of wax on it - white = OK. Ten years on, motorway grime, bird shat, sunbleached, arch rust = Not OK. (alright same for any colour but white is particulalry unforgiving)
This: Bellend
you could argue that for that model in any colour 😉
So @mattoutandabout can we expect to see a vajazzeled Smax sometime soon?

Only utility vehicles and cars with a motorsport/rallying pedigree should be white. This: Good
This: Bellend
Oh dear, you clearly know nothing about motorsport or racing/rallying pedigree if you refer to Audi as a bellend.
For a start, white/silver are Germany's classic racing colour, and Audi have as long and illustrious racing/rallying heritage as anyone out there!
This is an Auto-Union Grand Prix car, recognise the logo?
Audi Quattro rally car, recognise it?
Audi Le Mans racer?

I think he was making reference specially to the model of car and not Audi. I could be wrong though.
who's hot a white car.Essex man wife, and pikies.
Particularly white Audis and range rovers.
I could be wrong though.
Nah, don't think so.
Anyone like to guess what CountZero drives ? 😈
Had a white L200 and hated it but had no choice in colour as company vehicle but when that died got a silver L200 and much prefer that apart from the reflective green stripe down the side and reflective logo. But it does hide the dirt better than the white one did.
Best not take that ^ to Leeds. They'll think it's a taxii!
We've currently got two white cars and a white T4 van, all my cars since 1990 something have been white. I like white cars, much easier to clean than a black car.
Got my third white car, full Cheshire spec. with black wheels etc. however, have decided that the fad has long since passed, so on to pastures new. Next one will be British Racing Green. Or possibly Brown.
Not mine, google image but similar. I've got a side window. I've also painted the bumpers white and the wheels black. Makes it look more 'car like' if that makes sense, only a little thing but it looks so much better, although I think that may not be the consensus on here....
Wasn't much choice other than white when I was buying it, not brand new.

The further south you go the more attractive white becomes. You don't need a rag to be able to open the bonnet or boot, and the inside temperature in several degrees cooler than a dark car. Black cabs in London, white taxis in Casablanca.
The "black cabs" are white in many places eg Madrid, Leeds; I don't recall seeing that many palm trees when I lived in north Leeds

Congratulations on missing the point by a country mile.
Having been involved in motorsport from an early age I'm quite aware of Audis pedigree thanks, though If you can point me in the direction of all the wins Audi have achieve with the Q7 do I'd like to see them 😉
Does this clear things up…
This: Good

+1 by far the best colour. Never looks clean never looks dirty
Drove 200 shit-strewn miles to Wales & back over Xmas the car looked like it'd done a rally stage when I parked up. It rained overnight and in the morning somehow the car had cleaned itself
