I have my son's beaver camp coming up at Youlbury scout camp. Is it worth me bringing a bike to explore the local area? What's the riding like?

Would only get out in the evening once the kids are in bed (there will be other adults around) so 1-2 hours at a guess

Only really interested in riding from the front door, don't want to have to get in the car

Fairly basic and simple stuff, but the camp is in the middle of nowhere in that context, so quite nice. You can go 1 way and be in Oxford in minutes, but go the opposite way over towards Abingdon/Wantage and it's rural enough for back lanes. Not much in the way of incline round there really and i only know a few of the lanes/byways so can't be much more help than that

There are lots of little cheeky trails round there.  I ride it regularly in the evenings / dark.  Great fun, but all naughty.  Have a look on Strava and you will see lots of options.

When will you be there ?  Happy to show you if you like.

I'll be there this Saturday and Sunday evening. I'd love a guide and would gladly take you up on your offer if you're around please

Although for obvious reasons I'll probably not be able to get out until around 8.30-9pm and won't know for sure about timing until right up till that evening

Unfortunately so... Last time the kids were so excited to be in the same place at bedtime that it took them ages to go to sleep!

If you can't make it then no drama, I'll try to have an explore myself. Your recommendation re the heatmap is good, there are lots of little trails knocking about. If it's OK i might ask about what bits are worth checking out (e.g. NW corner of Abingdon airfield)

If thats Dalton Barracks that might be a heat map of 'cross racers .. was a fun course in the snow and cold and hub deep mud! Not sure if its publicly accessible normally?

Right, I'm free for Sunday night.  I can happily show you round for an hour or two.  Shall I meet you at the entrance to the scout camp then ?

The stuff I can show you is all very close to the camp.

*Brassneck - As for which bits to check out its hard to describe.  I can email you a GPX if you like.  Its all sort of cheek bits and pieces joined together by short bits of road.  Not much is actually a bridleway or footpath.

Join us if you fancy meeting strangers in the dark đŸ™‚
