Hi

2 riders do 100km with 2500m of vertical climb

One has all their climbing on mercilessly steep 8-12% climbs and consequently more flat between the hills
The others hills are less steep but does less on the flat if you see what I mean

If ridden by riders of equal fitness will the average speed over the whole ride be the same?

Multiple variables, but Im thinking the steeper rider will be more knackered due to their steeper climbs so will have their energy sapped for the flat bits where they could make up speed

PS Neither is on a tread mill 🙂

The rider with the flat sections will likely expend more energy fighting wind resistance than the one with the steady climb.

Theoretically, they should be the same. Conservation of energy and all that.

Some riders might be better at bursty climbs or sustained climbs, which will skew the results one way or the other depending on the rider.

The cake is a lie.
