Going to look at this McCulloch ride-on mower on Friday.

The seller doesn't know the model number. It's 2018 model. It's up for £900. I've googled it but can't work out the specs.

Anyone know what model it is? Are they any good?

Ask what the engine is probably Briggs and Statton, need to know HorsePower and type (Intech) it will have a model "plate" so you can check what it is.

Cheers for the reply.

AFAIK it's a Briggs & Stratton 20hp.

That looks like one of the generic ride ons rebadged as all sorts. I had a Husqvarna badged one like that for ~20 years without issue just belts and servicing. I sold the house it lives at - sadly.

So long as you can get parts, IME, it'll be fine though it does depend on what you're doing with it. Mine mowed an acre of rough ish pseudo lawn/pasture ~10 times p/a and was ace for that.

i spent many a weekend as a teenager sat on one of those in the early 2000s. Ours was orange, possibly a husqy, but im pretty certain it was identical save for a slightly different shaped front cowl/bonnet . Never caused any issues at all and never saw a service that i can remember.

Its an impossibly simple bit of mechanics, i think if you did end up having to work on it the hardest thing would be getting it up somewhere to get under it, or to tip it onto its side.

Pedal is on the left, which feels weird to think about now, but i drive now, and didnt before so maybe ours was like that and i never noticed.

Just bought a second hand Husqvarna mower with a 22hp Briggs & Stratton engine which looks almost identical to that. It replaced a 12hp Lawnflite mower that was slowly falling to bits. I use it for a rough paddock of about an acre and it's superb. It has 2 blades and a 46" wide cutting deck compared to a single bade deck on my old one so it has almost halved the time it takes to mow the paddock. Hydrostatic drive, cruise control and (joy) a cup holder! I almost look forward to mowing the grass now, especially on a sunny day with a beer in the cup holder and some toons or a podcast on the the Bluetooth ear buds. I have a similar grass collector but don't normally use it (once a year or so if we have mates camping) and a trailer which I do use a lot.

Thanks guys. All good info.

We have about 3\4 of an acre mostly lawn but some paddock and a trail. Not too rough.

Is £900 worth a punt?

Sounds a good deal to me. If it's been serviced and looked after. I paid £1300 for my Husky from a dealer, albeit with a trailer and short warranty included.

Thanks for the input everyone.

It was clean and had been serviced. The seller knew his stuff and took me through all the ins and outs.

A bunch of other people had been calling so I think I was fortunate to get in first. Loaded it up and drove home.

I can stop getting annoyed watching the grass grow now 😁.

Time will tell but £900 is pretty cheap and it looks clean.

It's not hydrostatic so it will interesting to see how you "enjoy" that.. But if you've not used hydrostatic then you've nothing to compare it to!

The collector looks like it relies on just the draft from the deck to get the cut grass up the tube into the bag.
This may be an issue if the grass is wet/long when you may get blockages in the tube - but I assume you'll not be collecting from the whole area.
My JD has an additional blower unit that sits at the exit of the deck and is belt driven by the deck.

Big mowers are fab - enjoy.

Yeah I've not used a hydrostatic so I won't know what I'm missing.

Noted on the grass collector. I won't be collecting the whole area and I'll endeavour to cut only short, dry grass. (Should easy enough in Aberdeenshire!)

I have a husqvarna lt151 which is similar. You can convert it to a mulching cut by buying new blades and a plastic cover.

I look after a friends John Deere. Probably a bit late now but the B&S Intech have a common fault with the crap auto decompressor that bumps the exhaust valve when starting. It breaks easily and is hard to start from cold with symptoms of a dying battery as the starter struggles against full compression.
Engine out job.

I just remembered a few extra pics I took whilst it was in my workshop complete with A-Team locked in a barn with a bit of booze style modifications to hopefully inspire you....
