We've managed to find a few really nice places in Rhosneigr within our budget but we've never been to Anglesey or North Wales for a summer holiday before. Rhosneigr looks like a really nice town to stay in for places to eat and things to do too.

The kids will be 10 and 12 next summer and love body boarding when on the beach. I've looked and it would appear one of the Rhosneigr beaches and a few others in the area will be good for body boarding too so that's beach days sorted, but what about days if it rains? What is there to do on the island if the weather is a bit crap? This is the west coast of Britain in the summer after all so you need to think of these things. Beaumaris Castle and the sea zoo look good but what else is there to do?

Calling Rhosneigr a town is a stretch.

Beaumaris Castle and the Sea Zoo are great, but both only 1/2 day activities at best. But the A5 means wit's quick to get to Snowdonia and all that has to offer.

Body boarding can be done in the rain.

I didn't think much of Sea zoo when we went. Pili Palas nature world near the bridge is ok though. The castle is well worth it for the kids to explore. Moelfre lifeboat station has a lot of interesting history as well. There's a nice beach round the back end of RAF Valley with a shallow bay that should be good for body boarding. Anglesey is lovely.

Top of island, Point Lynas Lighthouse - good for dolphin spotting, also the bay there is good for swimming - bit calm for body boarding (no facilities though - toilet near car park and that's it).

Trearddur Bay good body boarding etc, Porth Dafarch good for paddle boards (and has a toilet/shower).

Then everything else in North Wales.

The Oyster Catcher pub is OK in Rhosneigr, but it's great for RAF Anglesey and just watching the aircraft come in and out. Book if you want to go to eat, same with any pubs in Trearddur - busy most of the year.

If you are there Bank Holiday weekend, watch out for the Red Arrows as they are doing the Air Show at Rhyl.

To see a seal colony, Angel Bay at Rhos on Sea - you park up in the housing estate and walk upto the area.

Stayed there a couple of times, it’s a little town on the up, Anglesey’s Abersoch if you like. Beaches pointing in different directions so the weather doesn’t spoil so much. Decent places to eat and drink in town. Jets! Jets are always good. A bunch of neolithic and ancient stuff to look at.

Around Anglesey there’s a few bits for bad weather days, the transport museum is excellent and you can use their super cafe without going in. If Stone Science is still going, go there, proper old school collections of fossils and geology displayed in the owners barns.

Back on the mainland another museum worth a look is the air museum at Dinas Dinlle, good cafe there too, but getting there you will have already passed several world heritage sites and LlanfairPG for some Edinburgh Woollen Mill action.

Kids will probably love coasteering if they can swim. And you can do it in the rain…

Newborough Beach and Nature Reserve are supposed to be nice, but do get there early, they shut the road off as it fills up quickly. Our caravan is about 60 minutes from Anglesey, and we've been a bit late when deciding to visit there - we usually go to Porth Dafarch anyway as it's a nice cove (again not too late as parking limited).

Back into snowdonia in the wet. Electric Mountain, climbing walls, slate museum etc.

As above for the island, plus Parys Mountain and Holyhead Mountain, both better in good weather, obvs.

The coastal path is fantastic.

Inland, Electric Mountain is closed, but Sygun Copper Mine is good, but not a full day, as is the Slate Museum.

Greenwood Forest mini theme park is quite decent, but the 12 year old may get bored after the Roller Coaster and the Water Splash. Not cheap either, but the food was surprisingly good.

Bounce Below is ace but spendy.
They're too young for the fantastic zip wire at Bethesda, not sure about the go kart track there, but looked like fun.

Dinorwic Slate Quarry is fantastic for a mooch, if they like that sort of thing and you've prepared for a bit of exposure and cheeky exploration.

We found only one cafe open in Rhosneigr last time we went last summer (but outside the school holidays). Everywhere else was closed for refurbishment.
