My son "updated" to 8.1 two nights ago and can no longer play Minecraft,all drivers updated and no joy. Any simple way to sort it?
Wouldn't bother rewinding to 8 from 8.1 - too many other benefits to 8.
Best thing to do is install VMPlayer (now free for personal use) and install a Win 7 or XP virtual machine and install Minecraft on that.
This is much much easier to do than it sounds. You can then just load the virtual machine to run Minecraft.
I have just set up a virtual XP machine and a virtual Linux one and can have those to running together with the main Win 8.1 bit and literally just click between them.

Its great - I have two monitors with the XP VM on one and Win 8.1 on the other.
Simply swipe over the the XP machine and do what I need to do there (quite a lot of ham radio software doesn't run well on anything above XP) and then across to the other monitor to run all my normal stuff.
