They're not, they sell them in ASDA / Tesco.

Check out http://www.aquarterof.co.uk/ incidentally.

Tutti Fruttis are still about. Rowentrees also do a pick and mix bag of Tutti Fruttis, Fruit Pastels and Fruit Gums - totally disastrous to try and eat though, completely the wrong mix of textures. I guess rowntrees don't have sufficient financial muscle to buy shelf space in the main supermarkets anymore but B&M stock them.

Nuttals Mintoes. I made one last from our workshop in Durham all the way to Gateshead (to the Liner Concrete factory) & back to Birtley before it was gone.

For anyone in or near South Manchester - have a look in Bittersweet in Chorlton. I can promise you won't be able to walk out empty handed!

Refreshers changed a couple of years ago. They got rid of all the artificial tasty stuff, e-numbers and the like and left a completely boring sweet. Used to be that 2 packs and I'd be bouncing off the walls. Sadly not any more!

Same with me... 2 tubes of smarties back in the day and I was unstoppable... then an asthmatic wreck for the next 2 days. A childhood bereft of all the best sweets and orange/lemon squash so I would be able to sit still for more than a millisecond!

Space Dust ftw

Parma Violets ftl

And crisps that were all in the right colour packets. 7p a pack for Golden Wonder, 5p pack for onion rings and cheesy puffs, and still enough change from 10p pocket money to buy quite a few Mojos and Rhubarb+Custards.

Hi folks, I can remember fruit salad and blackjacks at 4 for 1d, ie 24 for 2.1/2p Proper wagon wheels(at least twice the size they are now)
Ditto Curly wurlies. gobstoppers and a sort of hard Chalk type lolly thing that probably wasn't far off being just that, didn't taste of much if memory is correct. Also got through loads of Victory Vs, Licquorice imps and god only knows what else.
Probably why I aint got no teef left
Still, happy memories. Oh nearly forgot Walls ice cream used to come as a paper wrapped little block to be inserted into its rectangular cone or between two wafers.
Bliss.... 🙂

I remember being in Infant 1. Beef XL crisps were 21/2p. Circa 1973.

Kola Kubes ftw

Lost a filling to a Drumstick lolly too.

The whole retro sweet thing brings back a whole host of juvenile memories, such as...

Trying to set fire to Parma Violets because they had Magnesium Carbonate in them and our childish brains figured that as Magnesium burns ferociously with a bright white flame, so would Parma Violets. We never quite got that to work.

Tipping a whole pack of Space Dust into your mouth in one go and trying not to have it explode out of your mouth and nose.

Using old style ring pulls from cans of drink as 'flying saucers'
[img] [/img]

Being completely bewildered at how they made Tab Clear colourless. It must have been the work of the devil

Trying to get drunk on cans of 'Top Deck'
[img] [/img]

Seemingly daily playground competitions to see who could last the longest sucking on a Fireball

We were at the New Mills (Derbyshire) carnival yesterday, home to The Swizzels Matlow sweetie factory. Where they still make many of the sweets you're all talking about.
My nephew had a drumstick lolly, as the parade passed by they were handing out the old fashioned sweets to the children.
I love cycling along the canal past the factory and smelling the sweets that are being made that particular day.

I used to eat chocolate fags in primary school in the late 70's early 80's- no one (including my mum) thought anything of it.

[img] [/img]

How times have changed- someone would be in trouble for allowing a child to have these today 😉

+1 For the Top Deck!! 😀

POSTED 23 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POST

Stripers? Surely you mean Pacers, ans Opal fruits became Starburst. Chewitts were even chewier than a 15 storey block of flats.

I had some Black Jacks the other day. They've changed the wrappers to something slightly less offensive than the ones they had when I was a kid.
