Anyone into retro gaming?
I ordered an Anbernic console a week ago and it was delivered yesterday. Brilliant thing for £64
I've built an arcade cabinet using a mini PC in the gubbins. I do fancy a handheld though.
I have two Game Gears needing recapped, a Gameboy Advance, an original Gameboy, a Master System, a Mega Drive, an N64, a Gamecube, a PlayStation, two PS2's (have drive issues and need cleaned up) and an original Xbox that's gone a bit senile.
Would I trade them all for an Analogue? Maybe. Is it fun tinkering with them? Yes.
One of my mates hords them.. but they are totally worthless (IMO) as you can run emulators on PC.
“One of my mates hords them.. but they are totally worthless (IMO) as you can run emulators on PC.”
The downside to emulators is the faff and often they don’t quite work right. That said I do fire up the old RPi on occasion to play old games.
As above, I have a bunch of originals. Atari 2600 VCS, Atari ST, Amiga A500, Dreamcast, PSX, Gamecube, ZX Spectrum, probably others I've forgotten. Mostly though if I'm retro gaming I have a ZX Spectrum Next. Jet Set blummin' Willy FTW.

As said they don't often work right as the hardware was a big part of the process. See Space Invaders for a good example of this, the reason it sped up was because it would render every single enemy from the beginning but as you shot them there was less to process so it sped up.
The Analogue machines are a very clever way of doing it, rather than emulating the software they emulate the hardware which gives the correct results.
I have a couple of play station1.
Sold most of the games.
Lost the love when one of them ate my grand turismo saves by crashing when it was saving.
When lockdown happened I bought what I thought was the upper nes mini. It was actually a million 8 bit games unning on an emulator. It was interesting to see what the games I used to play were like. For 30 min and then ingot bored

I can definitely recommend this one. It's an Anbernic RG35XX H.
Has Bluetooth, WiFi and hdmi port for connecting to a TV and using a wireless controller.
Comes with allegedly 5000+ games for all the old consoles upto PS1.
I've just added Mario Kart to the N64 section. Runs perfectly.

Not totally worthless. Can you take your pc into the toilet when you're making an offering to the porcelain throne?
Must be nearly that time of the decade I fire up the Atari 400 for an hour or two of cartridge based fun.
I've got a Panasonic 3DO in the loft.
I found my old BBC B at my moms in original box.
Not a gaming console but only used to play Elite.
Photo not attaching..
More retro love, how many of these have you played?
I found my old BBC B at my moms in original box.
I don't know much about retro gaming, so I googled BBC moms box.
Now I've lost my job. Cheers STW.
When I cleared out my mates house, he had everything from some old TV tennis game console, sega mega drive, Nintendo GameCube & chainsaw controller, numerous play stations and Xboxes and mountains of games - was quite shocked at how much some of it fetched on eBay.
I've a N64 and a GameCube and a TV with a scart connector! Playing Zelda four swords at the moment. PS3 lurking somewhere but that was my brother's and I've never played it.
I’ve all PlayStation consoles but never really use them other than my 5.
Between and my brother we've had most of them from the Commodore 64 right up until PS5. I checked out after the Nintendo GameCube but he's still well into them and refuses to sell all his oldies.
I had a big eBay clearout around 2014/15 and made a few grand, especially some of the Mega Drive and PS1 stuff (sold one rarely for 200 quid) but in hindsight would have made even more during the pandemic when everyone was sat at home on furlough and the prices went through the roof.
I have a Nvidia Shield TV Pro loaded with a few classics and emulators but would love to get one of those multi game full size arcade cabinets as that's the era where my best gaming memories come from (especially all the old SNK / Neo Geo arcade games).
Not totally worthless. Can you take your pc into the toilet when you’re making an offering to the porcelain throne?
Course you can.

Perfect Dark was better than Goldeneye in my opinion.....
Well this thread has led to me buying a Trimui Smart Pro off Aliexpress.
Partly inspired by being laid up with a sprained ankle. Bet it won't arrive in time for my holiday next week though.
More retro love, how many of these have you played?
I had a bunch of those. Astro Wars, Scramble, Firefox, Merlin, some no-name twin screen LCD shooter. A couple survive today. I killed my Astro Wars, running it off a power supply I discovered that if you upped the voltage the screen went brighter. So I upped it further and it went very bright, then very very dark permanently.
I've got a chipped PS1 and loads of software from back in the day, when I got my 1st, very temperamental, CD burner.
PS3 and PS 4.
Xbox, Xbox 360.
BBC B, which I don't to turn on until I replace the caps.
Also got myself a Pandora retro thing but I really need a smaller 4:3 monitor.

As said they don’t often work right as the hardware was a big part of the process. See Space Invaders for a good example of this, the reason it sped up was because it would render every single enemy from the beginning but as you shot them there was less to process so it sped up.
I did not know this. Makes sense now you say it. Ingenious.

That looks cool, could you report back when you get it please?
I've seen and been tempted by some, can anyone recommend something?
Harking back to v early days - scramble, defender ZX Spectrum games etc.

Not a handheld but my preferred choice.
Failed in my attempt to resist posting on this thread.
Like many others I have spoken to - I seem to like retro games for nostalgia and as they are shorter - they fit in better with my other commitments.
Yes, I have an emulator but also retro consoles - Sega Master System, Sega Megadrive, Sega 32x, Sega Dreamcast. Nintendo SNES, Nintendo N64, Nintendo GameCube. Some of the consoles I had - do not seem retro, but now I suppose they are - Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Wii U, Microsoft XBOX360…
One of my sons is has several retro handheld consoles - Nintendo Gameboy, Nintendo Gameboy Colour, Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP and then the more recent - but now still retro Nintendo DS.
It’s only a matter of time before our Nintendo Switch, Sony PlayStation 4 Pro and Microsoft XBOX Series S and X are also retro…
I sold all my Sega and N64 stuff in about 2012 when I moved house. Wish I hadn't! Oh well. The analogue stuff looks good, I'd be interested if/when their 3D one comes out.

The one in my original post has defender, scramble and loads of other arcade games as well as old games for consoles like N64, PS1, GB, Dreamcast etc.
It's got good reviews, screen is small but for the money is excellent value.
Bought it from Whatgeek which is based in Hong Kong.
Bloody hell, Kung Fu Master!

Yep! I'm hoping against hope it'll arrive before I go on holiday on Sunday, but it probably won't so I'll report back after that.
(I wouldn't normally be fussed about gaming on a family holiday to Dumfries and Galloway, but as I'm currently laid up with a severely knackered ankle there will be a lot more downtime than usual)
Bloody hell, Kung Fu Master!
Think that's exactly what I said when it loaded up.
Oh, and it's got Jet Set Willy as well
Perfect Dark was better than Goldeneye in my opinion…..
Mods!!! Lifetime ban needed ^^^^^^
Well I’ve just burnt an hour playing Gran Turismo on an iPhone mini. The licences are tricky using the screen controls plus tiny screen.
If I ever find a Stunt Car Racer emulator, I may never see daylight again.
Hmmm - I'd be interested in HardDriving

Arcade club in Bury has an original arcade version, it's probably my favourite game in there, it's bloody difficult though!
Arcade club in Bury has an original arcade version
Was at the Arcade Club a few weeks ago. That's what restarted my interest in retro gaming.
I built a Defender cabinet last year. Half height (bar-top), running a thing called a JROK, which is an FPGA reproduction of the hardware that ran that series of Williams cabinets.
Reproduction is perfect as it has an actual 6809 in it as a dedicated CPU, and the controls are as close to the arcade original as I could get. I still suck at it horrendously though.
Do we need a STW Arcade Club road trip?
Perfect Dark was better than Goldeneye in my opinion…..
Was it Perfect Dark, I wanted to love it but there was no option to invert the Y axis on the controller so I found it unplayable?
I loved both games, and played the snot out of both of them. But PD was just better for me. The multiplayer was so much fun. Laptop guns hidden in sneaky places was always hilarious.
Having your mates all in the same room to game was special. Online multiplayer is still fun, but for me you can't beat having people physically with you. I've got a phantom dead leg just thinking about it!
They've just put one in Leeds as well (hard driving)
We used to spend literally hours playing network Doom in my office after work. 3 or 4 of us in the same room. It was magic (once we had spent hours trying to work out how to get it working in the first place, stupid IPX multicast bollox. Novell I’m looking at you!)
Good times ?
EDIT - that ? was supposed to be an emoji. FFS!
There was a couple of years that without doubt, me and my mates were the best at the world at battle mode/block fort/MK64
We played first to 100 every night, must have played hundreds of thousand matches on that one map.
We were totally shit at the rest of the game.
Do we need a STW Arcade Club road trip
Name the date and time!

Myself and a few mates occasionally do this still, although it’s more likely to be Unreal Tournament or Serious Sam. Either will run on a potato, it’s quite easy to dig out a few crappy old laptops..
Mmmmonster Kill!!!

+1
Good idea
Leeds have now opened their new cafe area, lot more room. Bury is no doubt a nicer venue, much more atmosphere etc but I prefer the games selection at Leeds plus I get annoyed at the pinballs at Bury having so many bulbs out that you can't play most, at least with my vision hah. Also Leeds has Scud Racer which is my fav game across both.
Leeds has Scud Racer
Yeah but he doesn't have a Daytona 2 at any of his arcades!?!
Leeds has got a Namco Starblade, two player Sega Rally 3, a rare two player Sega Vitual On and Sega House of the Dead 4.
Not seen Andy for years! Was going to badger him to get a two player Sega Outrigger with stick & trackball controller (rare as **** even in Japan) and JJ squawkers. He had a Sega Radical Riders but I'm not sure where it went!
The F355 Challenge (a difficult arcade racer) is at Blackpool!
F355 was at Bury first then went so must have been moved there, quite enjoyable as different to most racers
Luckily my local small retro arcade has Daytona 2 🙂 Also the rare but rather dodgy controlling Sega Touring Car
@teaandbiscuits - quick update on the Trimui (it did turn up before I set off on holiday).
I'm impressed. I bought it without an SD card (heard they're usually dire, plus I get stressed when there's too much to choose from, so I don't want 10,000 games). I set up my own and updated the firmware following a guide online with no probs.
It seems to run any Playstation games (and earlier) I throw at it. So far I've tried Ridge Racer, Tomb Raider, Tekken 3 and Street Fighter Alpha 3. All good.
Older consoles fine too.
Controls are okay - joypad is not the best, I've got about a 50% hit rate on Street Fighter specials, lower with super moves. That could be more down to my lack of practice, though. Face buttons are fine if a bit small. Shoulder buttons the same (I've seen some reviews say they're terrible, but they seem okay). Not really tried the analogue sticks yet.
Overall ergonomics fine for what it is, I'd say. Wouldn't want to play it for hours, but that's not why I bought it. Fine for an hourish Street Fighter session.
Screen is nice. It's 16:9 which is mostly pointless as all the games are 4:3, though I think it plays PSP games which are 16:9.
Can't really comment on battery yet as I've not played it enough.
F355 was at Bury first then went so must have been moved there, quite enjoyable as different to most racers
It was I had most of the track records on it.
My brother tried it. His review "it's shit" 😀 seems to be most peoples experience of it. After a few corners most give up and go play (Out Run) something easier. You'd often see the machine abandoned with the car in a gravel pit and the timer counting down!
Scud Racer is great not played Sega Touring Cars.
I'd argue 4 player Outrigger is one of the best arcade multiplayer experiences going. Shame no one has heard of it and it's so rare even though Naomi cabinets are modular and probably the least rare cabs you can buy!
Some added maturity!
I've still got N64, GC, Wii, PS2, Xbox360, Dreamcast, MegaDrive, SNES & Gameboy.
Last year I ran a retro games night at our church & Goldeneye on the N64 was by far the most popular.
I'd argue 4 player Outrigger is one of the best arcade multiplayer experiences going.
I must admit I'd never heard of it either.
Is it any good on the Dreamcast? I've got 4 regular DC controllers. Does it need a special controller?
For anyone interested in retro emulation on Android , I’ve been bored due to being injured.
I’ve used Pi 4 and PC to play Amiga and console games, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Retro Arch and similar on Android.
Also had it working well on an iPhone 12 mini but the screen is tiny.
My old Work Moto G62 is capable of running PS1 and PSP games very nicely.
I’ve even bought a controller that clips to the phone.
Is it any good on the Dreamcast? I’ve got 4 regular DC controllers. Does it need a special controller?
Yes it's a great 4 player spilt screen (poor single player though) and no it doesn't need a special controller. For FPS games (Outrigger can be third of first person view, you can choose) on DC you can usually set the controls so the face buttons do Fwd, L, R, Rev and the analogue stick does look/camera movement. It works surprisingly well! The arcade machine had a joystick for character movement and trackball for look/moving the camera around.
It's exactly what consoles should excel at but don't anymore! DC had some outstanding 4 and 2 player split screen games for it's time. It can output 480p which helps these old machines still look alright on modern displays!
If you're into shumps Border Down for DC (single player) still stands up and isn't easy to find in arcades or anywhere else for that matter. You can DL ISO's for all the games so it's not much of risk if you don't like them.
