You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I did find another post from about a year ago, but it got sidetracked into sun sails and pergolas (neither of which what we really want nor can accomodate) so was just wondering whether anyone has experience of having a "butcher's window" style rectangular awning installed to the side of their house, say over a 3m bifold door for example, without being ripped off in any way.
To the layperson, it looks like a reasonably simple bit of kit but I'm turning up results saying £3k plus even without any sort of motorisation from prob glossier-than-necessary outfits. If that's the sort of ballpark, well so be it, but if there's a way of short cutting this, I'm all ears 🙂 If I could buy a good quality awning and then get "someone" to fit it to the back of the house, that might be the sort of thing I'm looking for, but where to start, brands etc. As usual with this sort of thing, you sort of wish you'd started thinking about it in the depths of winter rather than just as everyone else might be thinking about it, but that's life huh...
Edit: for example (without fine tuning any specifics, but are these buy-cheap-buy-twice?)
My MIL chose the one she liked from screwfix and paid her friendly handyman a small fee to fit it. Easy enough to DIY. She’s still delighted with it two years later.

Nice, thanks.
Can’t help on costs as our house had one pre-installed.
Stating obvious but they don’t like wind. Think of the forces at play on the mounting point when it’s fully extended and wind blows. I think you can get legs to support some models and then guy lines an option. A faff tho.
Ours old now and assume technology moved on. but ours not good at screening sun or rain. A very porous material so worth checking what it’s rated for.
None of the above very positive. I’d not spend on one as ours rarely used. I’d prefer pergola or standalone outdoor shelter.
Thanks @bri-72 I doubt very much it would be extended while the wind was blowing so don't think that's an issue. I think we are reasonably restricted to an extendable awning since a pergola for example would presumably need a pillar at one of the far corners from the house, and there is a garden rockery type thing inpinging on the ground space over that direction so it would be tricky. Plus it would mean that a fair fraction of the floor area being shaded was garden, so not really the idea...
It's more an effort to shade the inside of the house too, rather than the patio itself (although that would be welcome). Gave some consideration to blinds inside the bifolds but would prefer not to drill, plus a five year old tasmanian devil daughter would soon knacker them.
FYI Have a look at motorhome/caravan awnings, Thule and fiamma
They windin small and many of them have built in drop-down legs for corner support.
Update: got a quote off a guy a friend used (for a motorised pergola) to install a manual OR motorised awning 3.5m wide by 3m projection for £2000 all in. Apparently he is really good, does this sound about right? It seems less than the other headline prices on other installer brochure sites. Obviously *more* than the like of Screwfix but the peace of mind of someone installing it who knows what they're doing is attractive... Thoughts?
You can go much cheaper than that. We got a 4.5m ex display primrose awning for our patio doors for about £350 a few years ago and it has worked fine since.
