Any experience among STWers in using a banking app to pay cheques in ?
I was amazed that the app eventually accepted my phone camera image.
I was utterly dismayed that the bank then told me that the cheque wouldn’t be paid because the image was poor and that the name on the cheque didn’t correspond with my account name. ( It does).
Best part of 3 hours on the phone this evening and I’ve almost lost the will.
Anyone else had any issues ?
I've used mine for two/three years now. I pay in at least 8 cheques per year. Never had a problem (Bank of Scotland)
Hsbc one works fine, if you still struggle and have a post office nearby they handle banking for many banks Santander hsbc etc
Laddo has no problem with HSBC. Not yet needed to try the NatWest app myself
Lloyds here. Works a treat.
Have you tried sending the cheque by fax ?
Halifax wrote to me including a copy of the ( crystal clear) photo of the cheque. Addressed to me using my full name.
That name is exactly who the cheque ( from my father)is made payable to.
My dad is 84 and has all his marbles, including the ability to recall his own son’s name and write it legibly.
Apparently the ‘system’ has rejected the cheque and it won’t be processed further.
Great.
22 years and never had an issue at H’fax.Apart from with their credit card dept, which apparently isn’t part of retail banking. (So that’s ok because they can’t talk to me about that. Apparently!)
First time ever using their app to pay in and it blows it.
Progress eh ?
NatWest still don't do it for some reason so count yourself lucky(ish)
RBS here, I have to go into the post office, and they send it to the bank in a 'special envelope'.
The wonders.😂

Is your actual account name the same as your full name, I've cheques refused in person when the cheques said eg: Andrew Other but your account name is Mr A N Other
Wife regularly uses Barclays app to pay in with no issues. I can't remember the last cheque I had!
HSBC and done it for years via app.
Nationwide however still need me to toddle into the bank. How quaint.
Triodos app sucks badly. Emailed their 'helpdesk' about it and they asked if I had tried using my computer instead 🙁 (wasn't a scanned cheque issue - was just trying to do exactly the sort of transaction the app was designed to do and the error said contact the helpdesk)
First Direct works fine. Never had a query about cheques,

To be fair that is the case BUT my argument is that the full name on the account is exactly how the bank have written to me. I’m not having that as an excusable reason.
I've only had one cheque in all the years I've been using Barclays app. Unfortunately the limit wasn't high enough (redundancy payment) so had to call into the branch when it was open.
Used both Barclays and First Direct without issue. Success rate of 2 out of 2

Just been introduced for cheques up to £750 (I think)

Technically 'the rules' say different; if the cheque is crossed A/C Payee as most are in the print, then in theory they have to be paid into the account that matches the name. At bank's discretion I think and machines are not necessarily well programmed to deal with nuances, it possibly just reads the name on cheque vs name on account (not other details from within their CRM system) and if it doesn't match then rejects.
@grum they do now. Well they do on my natwest app, I did it the other day. It's fairly new.

Their app updated today, RBS app now scans cheques
First Direct works fine for me, and I’ve an apostrophe in my surname, which tends to upset banking systems. Barclays, for instance insist on adding a backslash to the apostrophe, and then say the names don’t match (and missing out the apostrophe means the names don’t match).
What’s a cheque ? 🙂
"To be fair that is the case BUT..."
No 'but'. Dem's da rules. Names don't match.
You could just get the person to either write you another cheque in the right name, transfer the cash or hand you the sponders?
To be honest - what @dudeofdoom says 🙂
What’s a cheque ? 🙂
Its the annoying thing that your kind and generous great aunty sends to your kids for their birthday.
works for me on FD when my mum sends a birthday cheque for £20.00...
How different are the account name and your full name? A simple Mr C Face vs Mr Cake Face or Mr Scone Feet vs Mr Cake Face?
Barclays App works fine but only upto £1k IIRC, over that and I have to post it in...
Account ( as seen on cards etc) is C F Ace.
Cheque is to Face Ace.
The full account name is ( and this is how bank mail is addressed ) is Mr Cake Face Ace.
I’m confusing my self now !!
Thrust of it for me is that banking cheques in this identical form, either over counter, or in deposit machine at bank have never, ever been queried. I’ve probably banked 15 or so over last 20 years which have been made out same way.
If they finally refuse to accept this one, my dad will piss himself, as he retired after 40years as a senior credit and finance manager in a major uk company.
I’m just playing Devil’s advocate in the face of equally faceless modern banking , I guess.
So the cheque is neither made out to the name on the account (C F Ace) or the full name which is associated with the account (Mr Cake Face Ace) but an entirely different name (Face Ace).
Common surname/forename/middle name?
It's only in the last couple of years that banks have started to associate Account Names to Account Numbers - in fact some banks haven't yet done this, but Halifax hve - which may be why you are seeing an issue now when in the past there hasn't been one and why your dad might piss himself.
End of the day, it's more secure.
Looks like user error on a few counts
1. Using a cheque in 2021
2. Not filling in the name correctly
3. Blaming the app/software/rules/process because you are not using it correctly
As someone who has a known name that is different from my official name - even written out - this is a real pain - not as bad as it was in the 80s, and a helpful bank manager got the name on my account changed to accommodate most of the options :/

I’m 61 dude and have god given right to be known by my name.
I’ll accept cheques as they still exist even though I haven’t personally written one in past 10 years.
To become all ‘Luddite’, as and when it suits, because the system forgets the real people, is fine by me.
Okay;
4. Thinking the system is against you because it has forgotten the real people
I know, but stubbornly I’ll argue the toss. Go ride me bike in mid Wales at the weekend.
Kick Halifax into the long grass once all my DDs are paid on monday.

I may have misread your name lol, better not say what.
