My car (an Audi) after 9 and a bit years has decided it can't be bothered to take any notice of it's remote key locking, unless I actually put the key in the door lock and turn it. If I do this, then everything is fine for a few minutes and then the said car becomes all uncommunicative again.
What's that all about?
RTFM reveals nothing relevant to this problem.
Grrrr! 😆
Alarm or locking ?
If the car alarm becomes unsync'd with the key fob, you need to do something like arm (or de-arm) the alarm via the fob whilst the key's turned in the *ignition*. Or something like that...that *is* in TFM, tho' - but mebbe not be the problem you've got..
The locking and the setting of the alarm occur simultaneously.
The problem is the car won't respond at all.
I hate to point out the patronizingly obvious but have you got a battery in the keyfob. After nine years might be flat!
I don't know much about it but I believe the keys are more than just keys. Mine is the immobiliser as well. If the battery is flat the car won't work!
The batteries in the keys have been replaced and this happens with both sets of keys in any location.
I am unocking the driver's door, putting the key in the ignition and swithcing on, then pressing the unlock button, removing the key. I think this might be wrong, but the manual is rather vague about the task. After doing this. all then works fine, but only for a few minutes.
The vehicle's battery has a good level of charge.
This appears to be some sort of electronics issue within the vehicle.
Is there anyone with direct expereince who can fill me in? Thanks in advance!
Is there an independent VAG specialist near you you could contact?
You may find it's a well know fault with a (possibly) simple and inexpensive solution if you give them a ring
My Passat needed recoding as a key kept forgetting how to operate the central locking, though it worked fine in starting the car. The independent VW specialist charged me a tenner to reset, and it's been fine since.
This may work but no guarantees.
Remote Control Programming (1997 ON)
Procedure
1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.
2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second
key.
3. Using the remote control press the Unlock button once, and the horn
will sound once.
4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate the coding
procedure. The remote control will now be programmed.
NOTE : When performing programming on additional remotes the procedure
is the same, except you press the unlock button 2, 3 or 4 times for the
different remote.
For example : If programming 2 remotes press the unlock button twice with
a 1 second interval between each press, repeat for 3 and 4 remotes.
5. Switch Ignition OFF.
6. Remove key from ignition and check for operation.
7. The coding procedure can be repeated up to 4 times for additional remotes.
8. The ignition must be switched OFF between programming each remote
control.
Remote Control Erasing (1997 ON)

2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second
key.
3. Press the remote control unlock button 5 times in 1 second intervals.
A short horn will sound.
4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate memory
erase.
5. Switch ignition OFF, all remotes are now erased.
