Good luck to N5 boys and well done H boy.

Might bimble down later to see how my H class got on. Then I can start reviewing results vs predictions and breakdown of gender and SIMD category for the meeting with no biscuits with the head.

Aah, yes.  Back to work on Monday for two inset days; sat on our arses in the main hall for illegible PowerPoint presentations and finding out the latest catchphrases and buzzwords in education.  And then looking at our results and writing reports on seeing how we compared to the fictitious school that INSIGHT has generated.

Of course, we could actually spend much of the time actually preparing ourselves and thinking about the teaching and learning but that would be too practical and fruitful.

And so to England. Crash2 got straight A's and is off to Imperial.

Slight anticlimax going to the school as they all log on to UCAS first thing to find out they are accepted or not, then wander into the school to find out actual grades and do the jumping in the air with an envelope photos.

Got a very stressed out miss mogrim at home at the moment - despite getting the grades her first choice university has rejected her.... and of course their admissions office hotline is close to collapse (she was 230 in the queue to be attended...)

I think it's because they kept missing their targets.

I work at a uni - we've currently got about 80 people manning the phonelines, and i imagine most others will be the same.  She shouldn't have to wait too long!

I too work at a Uni and I know that they have many people manning phones.  To the extent that the number of 'spare' lines to make calls in and out of the rest of the Uni has been compromised!  Exactly what the IT department promised wouldn't happen when the moved to a virtual exchange

or more likely what the telecoms sales rep promised wouldn't happen in order to make the sale.

2 hour wait was the last thing I heard, could be an expensive call from Spain 🙁

Teen2 got solid grades and am very proud of him, he's not going to university (yet, plans may change), but has options to do so if he wants to.

He will, however, finish his private pilot's license training this weekend. Then it's a year spent working, hours building, night and instrument ratings, followed by full-time flying school for his commercial license.

Makes university look cheap!

In my comprehensive school back in the 80's we had one pupil out of the whole year (400 maybe?) who managed to get a single A grade at A level - that made the local papers believe it or not and it certainly wasn't a bad school.

Grading was different in 80s.

How exams were graded really was different: When Advanced levels were introduced in the early 1950s, there were only two outcomes, pass or fail. These were qualifications for a small top slice of the year group. Grades were introduced in the 1960s, with a fixed quota for each band. So the top 10% achieved an A grade, and then the next 15% a B grade and so on. It meant that even if the entire year group made more progress, the proportion of grades would remain the same. This system stayed in place until the mid-1980s.

Zoiks!

I wonder if it's a Russell Group uni?  We're a mid-table ex-poly, and seem to be quieter than last year (no phone queue at all). Many suggesting that a lot of students who get good grades now phone a more prestigious uni to see if they can 'upgrade' - it's not just about people who missed their grades these days.

But hitting your grades and then being declined just sounds like a flat out mistake!

In the end the estimated wait time was way out, she was only on hold for 10min! Turns out the admissions office had requested some extra documentation, to be uploaded to their website using a secret numeric code that she didn't have... She'd sent a couple of emails their way to ask about this, but no reply. And then they automatically rejected her for not having sent all the paperwork in  🙄

Anyway, complaint opened, they've found her emails asking for the code, and fingers crossed all will be well. Made for a very stressful morning though.

"Got a very stressed out miss mogrim at home at the moment – despite getting the grades her first choice university has rejected her…. and of course their admissions office hotline is close to collapse (she was 230 in the queue to be attended…)"

Don't know if it's the case but if a course is oversubscribed do they start to cherry pick the students?

This is why I've encouraged miss ws to do extra stuff, she's currently on the ncs course, is going for dofe gold plus we will found out next week if she achieves the ebac amongst the gcse results.

I know it's very tough out there these days and my thoughts are that that little bit extra may make the difference when applying for uni or even a job.
