This is driving me nuts. Managed to delete the chats from one person but can’t seem to restore them. Thing is, it should be so easy. I have a backup from a few weeks ago and every web page (and WhatsApp help) says “just delete the app and reinstall”. It should prompt you for your phone number and then give the option to restore from backup. Except it doesn’t. Whatever I do, as soon as I install the app it’s back to how it was, with all the messages except the ones I deleted. It never asks for my phone number and never offers to restore from backup.
It’s on an iPhone (13) and I’ve got it so it doesn’t restore from the cloud, rebooted endless times, turned off iCloud, logged out. None of it makes and difference. I just can’t get it to do a clean instal without the existing messages.
No idea but my guess is that the app is syncing some how to the real time position too. Have you tried applying the back up but the phone is offline, using a pc? Once you go back online it’ll probably revert if that is the cause but you could extract any details you wanted..
Have you tried asking for a copy of the conversation from the other person (if they've still got it)?
