[Closed] Resting Heart rate and Cardio

Recently (a month ago) got a dog, as a result time for rides has taken a hit and my cardio time has taken a subsequent dip too, although I am walking lots now.

According to an (admittedly inaccurate) Garmin watch, my heart rate at rest has steadily risen from low 50's to low 60's.

I'm 42, pretty heavy, although a healthier weight than I was this time 2 years back. I know cardio fitness drops off quickly but is this a likely normal outcome of such a change?

Lots of things can affect it, stress, caffiene, garmin unreliability, poor sleep, loads! IIRC it's how quickly your HR returns to rest that is an indicator of fitness, rather than just resting HR.

No doubt someone better informed will disagree!

Asymptomatic Covid 19?

Way too quickly for such a change. I'd double check with another HR monitor.

NB I got worried a while back as my resting HR started rising - turned out my Polar watch had gone faulty! Got a new one under warranty (excellent Halfords service) and back to normal now...

Asymptomatic Covid 19?

I'd love to know if it raises HR. Possibly if the immune system isn't that stressed by it, you don't see a big jump. NB That's what I thought I had when mine went from 50 to 65 over a month....

Walking is the best cardio exercise you can do, though not sure what type of exercise/training is best to improve resting heart rate. It might not follow it is cardio exercise and actually anaerobic exercise. Maybe when taking the dog for a walk, walk faster to get heart rate up?

Asymptomatic Covid 19?

My resting heart rate fluctuates between 40 and 60 on a daily basis. Depends on numerous factors. I think thats pretty normal.

I'd put covid at bottom of list of potential reasons unless you have other symptons.

Yep, can't imagine your muscles have wasted away that quickly. For resting rate I'd probably just count it myself anyway.

The general rule of thumb is you lose cardio fitness at the same rate you gained it, so if you've trained for years, it will takes years to lose it. Just taken up running 2 weeks ago, you'll probably be back to square one in a few weeks.

The HRM on my Garmin watch is laughably bad. It was terrible, then it was ok, now it's back to terrible. I'm assuming it's due to the various software updates. It tracks miles off my chest strap at the moment.

I wouldn't get too hung up on it unless you're feeling ill or impaired

According to vioactive my heart rate was 165bpm during yoga sessions either side of a jog which maxed out 139. The jog was definitely more strenuous than the yoga but I was a bit worried as my max HR is 161. Today my average resting heart is down to 49 the lowest i have seen. Hopefully the watch is goosed!

I found that the HR wrist monitor on my Garmin Instinct was very inaccurate while walking, though better on bike. It would regularly record HR around half what I knew it was from a chest strap

Interestingly with better rested legs my 5k time is coming down at the moment, still not fast but getting closer to sub 28 which is ok for me! As for time to build up, I've been regular cycle commuting for the last 2 years, then post apocalypse faux commutes throughout the year, but I just have the time with the new dog and a wife who goes into work.

I don't believe/think it's covid related, I barely interact with anyone, I work from home all the time and I haven't been to pubs much since we were allowed to go again.

I'm tempted to start biking a bit more to see if it drops down again.

Thanks for the responses all.
