Bit of a long shot, we've decided that the hotel food isn't really up to much and one of the things we love about Italy is eating great food. So we're here in Riva del Garda, out towards the Torbole end, anyone got any recommendations?
We booked half board for ease with a little one in tow (4 months). However the hotel food is so mediocre we've decided we'll also eat out for dinner from now on. All places have been fine with a (very) small child so far at lunch and I'm sure an early dinner would be fine.
I'll name and shame once we've left.... although other than the food the hotel is fine. Perhaps we may be of the wrong nationality to appreciate the food.
I've just looked on TripAdvisor to see if I could remember one we ate at, I'm pretty certain it was Leon d'oro. It was recommended to us and I seem to remember thinking it was pretty good at the time, I'm sure if we went back to Riva we would go back there!
But to be honest, we didn't have a bad meal in Riva, apart from at the hotel!!

Hi we’ve been out there a couple of times and found a really nice restaurant almost by accident, recommended by the hotel we were staying at. It’s out the Torbole end but up the road heading towards Arco irc. It would only be a few euro in a taxi. But probably worth booking as it’s very popular with locals. Simple menu, everything made on the premises.
Last time I was there had a warm octopus salad, a very good steak, and the best tiramisu I have ever tasted.
The name of the place is la colombera
Grazie Mille! Will check both out
The hotel was one of the Tonelli hotels. It wasn't too bad but the real disappointment was the food. The hotel's main customer appears to be German and tours, e.g Riviera Travel, staying a night or two.
The menu tended to be geared towards German tastes, which is fine* but it was pretty poorly executed. Then when the tours arrived we saw a change in the food and it became ok on those nights. The table wine offered was undrinkable regardless, which is not good when you're in wine producing region and country!
Anyway, places we can recommend are:
Ristorante Pizzeria Bar e Gelateria L'Ora - http://lorarivadelgarda.com/
and
*it is the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region after all
We stayed in one if the tonelli ones and thought exactly the same thing. We were half board, not through choice. The hotel itself was fine, just the evening meal was awful! We ate there on the first night to check it out, then decided not to repeat that mistake! Unfortunately we did later in the week as we got back late from a long day out. The same elderly couple were on the table next to ours and the husband did nothing but moan about how bad it was. We suggested eating out, he said "where!?" We said "anywhere, you're in Italy!"<span style="font-size: 0.8rem;"> Bumped into them on the last day, they hadn't had a single meal outside of the hotel! The wife looked miserable.......!!</span>
Good to know we are not alone in the Tonelli club! We booked a package through TUI* thinking it would be would less stressful with a small child...... We normally booked hotels, flights etc ourselves. We hired a car as TUI thought it would be fine to have a 4 month old on your lap in on coach for 2 hours.
Have you visited the area again since? If so did you find anywhere better to stay? I cycled through Torbole and wondered if that would be better place next time. The windsurfing looked fun!
*Travelling with the TUI crowd was an insight into how the other half holiday. Visit an area and don't leave the hotel, bar the odd sight seeing trip, shout loudly at the natives in English if they don't understand... e.g. perhaps if your Daughter is allergic to dairy, learn the Italian for "no cheese" just to be sure on preventing her becoming severely ill.
