Have a stag night in Liverpool next weekend - Be an older crowd so expecting a relatively sedate affair, prob happy to bed down in the Phil for a session. Anyone have restaurant recommendations round the university / Hope St area? Or I guess anywhere central - it's easy to walk around town.

The carriage works at Hope St Hotel is nice, a bit fancy for a stag do IMH.

HOST (oriental cuisine) is opposite the Hope St Hotel and is nice, social atmosphere, they have big sharing tables that might suit a bigger group.

Round the corner is the quarter that I really like, low key and good food, it has lots of small tables so might not suit a big group though.

The clove hitch is the other end of Hope St and again is good.

A few minutes away on Berry Street is TriBeCa which is a good social place for Pizza.

Any Q's about any of these in any more detail or anywhere else in Liverpool, just let me know.

I went HERE on a stag do in Liverpool a couple of years ago. Was one of the best churascaria places I've been to. Good for a stag do (unless there are veggies).

Agree. Really liked HOST when visited a few months ago. Went back following evening too, great food and drink.

I always had Alma De Cuba down as more of a place to take a lady, not a group of mates on a stag do.

Fantastic place though,

Thanks all - plenty to go on there, like the look of HOST for a group.

Anyone know of a place for some civilised bevvying past 11 round those parts?

Not been to Liverpool but the Leeds one is good. Very male oriented due to the carnivourous slant of the menu so I'd expect they'll host you if you're well behaved and I'm sure the Leeds one has benches for larger groups.

Depends what your 'scene' is, but I like the shipping forecast, Brooklyn mixer, Alma de Cuba and saltdog slims all within a few hundred yards of each other around bold/wood/fleet/seel street(s). A few minutes walk down the hill towards town from HOST. All nice, in a way where there's still atmosphere and good music but without being full of kids and chavs.

I'd avoid Matthew St area, it might have the recognisable Liverpool name because of the Beatles, cavern club etc... But IMO it's pretty rough and to be avoided.

The Phil (and Fly in the Loaf, etc) should all open til midnight on Friday or Saturday night. Shipping Forecast and other pubs mentioned by jeffm open til 3 I think, though you might not get seats for a big group if you turn up at midnight. After that, there are always the 'brand' pubs (Walkabout, Revolution, etc) on concert square.

And +1 for the Clove Hitch, the early dinner menu is good value.
