Morning peeps,

So after about 10 minutes of deliberation I punted for an inflatable kayak after seeing one in decathlon the other day. After a bit of researching I found this bad boy on Preloved and drove over to Southport the other night!! The plan is to get another one and have and adult and a kid in each one and maybe a bit of camping gear as well!! proper adventure time!!

Now I've Kayaked a bit in the past in different places but have only done rivers and the occasional canal in the peak district. I'm aiming to get out with the kids for a lil play over the weekend and wanted to confirm access issues before it ends in tears when we turn up and get turfed out!

Looking online and through the peak websites etc seem to suggest access is fine but thought I'd check.

The most local to me to start with are probably Errwood / Fernlee Reservoir and Combs reservoir.

Any good suggestions welcome!! WW too as I've now relighted the fire and already started looking at some WW boats 🙂

Errwood access is exclusive to the local club is it not?

I can't find anything on their website but i'm pretty sure that's the case. Peak paddlers.

Those reservoirs owned by a water company rather than by the UK waterways, are usually restricted access for various H&S reasons. IIRC anyway.

Not sure on those you have mentioned.

Carsington water don't allow inflatables. http://www.carsingtonwater.com/RYA-Windsurfing-and-Sailing-Lessons0024v01.htm

Rudyard allow canoeing at a charge of £5/boat/day. This would be a good place for a first try out of your new boats. http://www.rudyardlake.com/lake_activities.htm

Edit: A BCU membership gets you a license for access to a lot of waterways, canals etc. As well as third party liability insurance, which some pay to launch places insist on.

I only know about stuff down the bottom mostly, so might be a bit far for you.

I read last year that Belper River Gardens were letting people launch to paddle upstream - something like a tenner a boat, limited number of boats on the water, only when the rowing boats are open (summer weekends). I haven't checked, just saw it on canoe website but it is a lovely bit of water if so (and great for kids, flat water, lots of places to pause for picnics - you're not officially supposed to get out of the boats onto the banks but people do).

I think most of the big reservoirs (Ladybower, Derwent etc.) don't allow it, supposedly for 'health and safety' reasons - although how it is different from allowing a load of anglers to fish from boats on them I don't know.

There is a bit of the Derwent at Matlock that is officially accessible and not contested (Poet's Corner to the Slalom Course), depending on the weather that can be proper white-water in parts though, not what you're looking for without someone experienced taking you down it. Also there are a bunch of other bits of the Derwent that are paddled (whether the access is legal is an ongoing debate), but again you'd want someone experienced with you (and to know about the weirs and things).

Oh and Cromford Canal - flat boring water, no idea why you'd do it, but a small bit of it is paddleable, again with some kind of complicated access agreement/number limit, not sure of the details.

Joe

Rother Valley allow inflatable kayaks with kids as long as they wear vests and you do the forms - not quite the peak and leave nothing in the car but fun for kids if easy to get to

edit great pic!
