My son's Z3c screen has died, it seems to be quite a common issue after a few years use. I'm going to have a go at repairing it with a replacement screen (and frame?) but don't know which brands to go for/ avoid. OEM is £99 and I could get a whole phone for that!
So peeps, what screen for a mobile? Something to make it come alive!
Just get a z5 compact from eBay? Plenty about. I picked one up from here for about £65.
I'd thought about that too- but worried that the screen may go again 🙁
I went to replacebase, they seem fairly legit and specify if it's authentic Sony or OEM.
They also sell all the necessary tools, cheap.
I replaced the screen on my Z1 compact. Physically the process was easy enough, but of course the end result wasn't entirely successful, the screen registered touches but the backlight appeared to have gone, no display! I did some research and as soon as people started talking about 'jumping' circuit boards with micro soldering etc. etc. I realised I was out of my depth and just binned the lot before it started to annoy me, have a 1 year old in the house right now so don't have the time for precision electrical engineering projects!
Spare parts now ordered, wish me luck!
Just spotted this. I have a Z3c with a badly cracked screen. Good luck, Ambrose, and please post back with what parts you bought and how it goes.
Easily the most fragile and costly phone i have ever owned. The screen would crack without any help whatsoever. Probably got about 5 new screens in total. Just the worst.
Good luck.. but if it goes again my advice would be get rid!
I had mine repaired at carphonewarehouse for about 60 quid. They did a brilliant job, although they re-flashed my rom back to factory so I had to get my custom rom back on there again. The screen they use is very high quality so I think it's genuine Sony. I bought a cheap Z3C imported from Hong Kong as a back up and there is a slight difference in screen quality so I think that one was non genuine.
Well- Go Me! I seem to have done it AFAICT all functionality is restored.
I purchased parts from Replacebase, as suggested above. Parts came to just shy of £50:00 inc p+p.
I viewed loads of vids on YouTube before but the most useful source was the iFixIt site, I found the step by step pics easier to work with.
There are loads of cheap ebay phone repair kit tool sets available- if you have jewelers screwdrivers and a plectrum or two you will be fine though. If not, the kits are dirt cheap and very handy, esp the suction cup.
Best tool (absolutely essential I'd posit) is a hairdryer. I have used a grill before but that was really chancing it.
Good luck
