I have an up-and-over single section up-and-over garage door, 4.3 m wide x 2 metres high. It needs replacing because it has zero insulation, massive gaps around the edges, is pretty flimsy and looks rubbish. The gaps and bad insulation are a particular problem because our sitting room is right over the garage - so they're both freezing in winter.
Does anyone have any experience, guess at costs or tips? I think I want a multisection/roller, decently insulated door with wood effect finish (local planning rules). No windows. Garage is structurally sound and clean, so installation should be easy...
Costco does fixed price jobs through a contractor for £2700. Is that good?

Shouldn't you be looking at insulation 'twixt garage and sitting room?
No idea if they operate in your area, or do one wide enough, but... a while ago i had one fitted. Much more at the 'budget' end of the spectrum, but have been very pleased with it thus far.
I’ve had an electric roller shutter on my workshop since 2015. It is insulated to a certain extent and draft free but it is definitely the weakest point compared to the rest of the worksop insulation. Got it fitted by a company here in Chesterfield where that’s all they do, if you've got space above the opening, 300mm I believe, then not only you get headroom but it’s more secure apparently. It’s not as secure as an industrial type door but not bad. Hope this helps.
I still need a garage door but they all look the same and they're all bloody expensive. Ours has been screwed shut since it was popped up by 4 blokes and my bikes went missing. I'd really like to start using it again but I want something that won't open as easily as a curtain.
I don't mind paying for a good door but it's hard to tell which ones are good or how one is better than t'other.
Went through this last year. Had quotes ranging from £950 for uninsulated (Garolla) up to £4K (until the salesman started doing the good old double glazing hard sell "I'll just give my manager a call" etc and dropped it to £2200.) (Crocodile)
As my garage is no longer used for cars I actually went for a patio doors type affair from a local window company for £1200.
Had an electrically operated roller door fitted two weeks ago - £2300. They're not as weathertight as you'd imagine: the top seal can be draughty (I've fitted some extra seals to both the last roller section and the outer facing which has improved things loads) and on the edges around the frame - there's a LOT of mastic to make hole free.
Have you looked at gluing some superfoil to the ceiling in the garage as well?
I've just ordered one from Rollerdor for 3m wide, 2m high, full auto open close, external manual override, alarm etc. Laminate finish bumped the price up to £1525. Good online quote engine, fitting service seems to be £600. I'm going DIY though.
A mate fitted one from here last year, was well pleased with backup & support he got.
We just had one fitted - a double garage door (not sure of exact size but it's big) with insulation, two remote fobs, external manual over-ride (as there is no alternative way in) and 'safety edge' (sensors that stop the door if there is an obstruction) - fully fitted for £2,350. I used them after a recommendation on here.
Garolla quoted £3,600 for the same spec.
I have an insulated Hormann double garage door. It wasn't cheap to say the least but when all the paint fell off after 9 years (peeled off in big sheets) they swapped it , no quibbling, and that was unprompted after all I did was ask them for a RAL number so I repaint myself

I have one of these . You'll be wanting to think about additional security if any bikes inside. They are pants security wise. - the price is right though.
Slimline roller door here. It's ok for draughts but it doesn't look very sturdy and is annoying when you just want to pop in quickly.
Annoyingly I missed a double uPVC set of doors on Facebook recently with vertical plank style infill panels, it would have only needed a 100mm timber down one side to make it fit.
Thank you for your feedback so far. It is really helpful.
That RollRight link ia very useful - esp because it gives a price online based on measurements. I really don't like dealing with sales people...
Is there any security rating system for garage doors ?
Timely, as I broke my (twice repaired) up & over door yesterday. Real fight to get it closed as it popped out of the runners 😖
Fella that fixed it said it was £1300 for the cheapest single electric roller. I’m going to have to pay a bit more than that as he did say they are quite slow to open. That would drive me nuts as its the only way into the garage and I’m in and out so much. Hoping to keep it under £2k, but gonna need it done pretty quick as I can’t open it at all now!
His brochure says electrics are more secure, does say “insulated door” keeps house warmer, reads as if the insulation part is an additional feature.
If you want insulated, secure and easy in / out for bikes and stuff then side hinged is great (assuming it is a single car width door). We fitted Teckentrup in our old house and they were good - lightweight and well insulated.
https://www.teckentrup.co.uk/garage-doors/side-hinged-garage-doors
Lathams are now also doing very secure steel insulated side hinged twin doors for garage fronts.
https://www.lathamssteeldoors.co.uk/security-garage-doors/side-hinged-garage-door/
Not seen those side hinged before - absolutely ideal for the in and out of bikes. Better by far for my usage. Will be investigating! thanks!

That's what I'd like to see. Most of them are shockingly easy to open.

I like the Latham doors. They don't currently offer fitting though. They look like a DIY job if you've got all the gear but I can imagine a day's work turning into a bit of an ordeal if you break something, need to go shopping for tools, bits and bobs etc.
I've fitted a single Latham's door and it came with a VERY comprehensive fitting kit. Screws for direct into the masonry, SDS drill bits of the required sizes, wind in / out bosses so you don't need shims, large hex key for the bosses, seals, silicone etc etc.
The hard bit is the massive weight of the doors (mine was the top security one - in hindsight probably a bit ott) and you need a slightly oversize opening - if it fouls on a sticky out brick then you struggle squaring up the frame (and that is crucial to the door operating smoothly). They do slim infill panels that slot over the frame for top or side(s) which help with this and also shield the fixing screws.
The Teckentrup we had fitted and wished I did it myself as they made a bit of a hash.
And yes side hinged are really convenient if it is for frequent access without putting the garage contents on display.
And you don't need a chop saw - a hacksaw works fine.
I think that’s beyond my DIY skills (doesn’t take much tbh!) but the Teckentrup site has a local installer search. Just wish garage websites weren’t so coy about the prices 😖
I suspect all the door places have a massive markup.....
There are often new Teckentrup doors on eBay to give an idea of product price. Removal of old door and shonky fitting was 2-3 hours for 2 people.
I'd imagine any decent builder or general door fitter could fit a Latham's door in a day or less (but it does need two pairs of hands).
For good security it needs a 3 star euro cylinder lock.
Side openers for security and warmth if single garage door but what if you have a double width opening?
Found a company fits a brand call Novoferm locally - found the Novoferm price list online.. £2.5K + VAT!! for a manual opening side-hinged door?! How the f...??
These are the Teckentrup doors on ebay at about £1300. The widest Lathams with a lock upgrade is £960+VAT. I came to the conclusion that some of the list prices are artificially high so the suppliers can claim to be giving a discount.
Can you stud wall it and put a normal door in it?

That, but also many builders etc will charge for labour + materials. They'll charge you the list price for the materials, and then pay the lower price for the materials (either by way of discount or "rebate" after the fact).

wait till you find out that tesco doesnt pay the price on the shelf for the milk it sells you....

Absolutely - and the likes of Garolla are the 'SafeStyle' of the garage door world. When I started looking, I got a price using the online calculator one Sunday afternoon. Literally about 30 minutes after I got the quote, I had someone call me trying to get me to purchase. I was so annoyed at them calling (without permission) on a Sunday trying to do the hard sell and spinning all the lines about meeting targets and they could get the price down if I committed straight away before the month end etc. I hung up and blocked the number.
I know a bloke who should be able to fit for me. Seen suitable doors around £400-500 on ebay, so I'll probably go for something like that. Security and insulation aren't major issues for me.
Funny that this thread was titled "boring content" - it's been so interesting and useful!
wait till you find out that tesco doesnt pay the price on the shelf for the milk it sells you….
The difference is that Tesco doesn't kid on that they're not charging a markup. And they don't charge labour and materials separately. But apart from that, you've made a great point.
Update to the Rollerdor I mentioned I'd order up-thread. Arrived this week (3 weeks order to delivery), fitted it today. Came with Somfy control box which I wasn't expecting, bonus!
Needed some prep work to trim back a steel lintel overhanging inside the garage, and framing to make up for double brick wall at sides vs single skin skin above. Carefull read of instructions and lots of measuring and checking and all went smoothly. Bit of a struggle to hook the curtain to roller. Very pleased with the end result.
The old up'n'over door had one final attempt to kill me. It starts to swing shut with the slightest nudge, and a 10" pivot arm mounted at mid height swings inwards and upwards. I'm stood between said pivot and a tool cabinet fixing the new control box in place, when sodding door starts to move. Caught in it time otherwise it would smash my hip and rip out my guts. Revenge will be oh so sweet tomorrow when I cut the door into sections with the 9" angle grinder.

Not sure what your point is. Profit is profit. Whether it's transparent or obsfuscated. You seem to have an issue with folks making a profit.
If you go for side hinge make sure it's in a frame and from a good manufacturer.
I've fitted 3mt wide 1/3. 2/3 doors both without and with frames supplied.
The without frame ebay special was in honestly cheap for a reason if it last 3 years I'd be very surprised security is about 2/10 unless you add extras like I have.
This was fitted this weekend but time was taken for new fascia boards painting ect.
The doors within a frame was a rolls Royce in comparison multi locking 4 hinges per side built in shoot bolts for locking and euro locks. Took me less than 2 hours to fit.
Tbh one door was £370 and the good one was a grand so no real comparison.
If your after heat retention I would insulate the space below your living room before insulating a door.
Interesting updates - thanks @steveb and @pk_13
you seem to have an issue with folks making a profit.
I seem to have a problem with folks being dishonest.

So you have issue with Tesco then who obsfuscate
Your paying profit materials and labour on that milk ..... You just don't know it.
Imagine getting a trade price on something and adding a mark up MONSTERS
I worked in a bike shop once. We would buy stuff from the distributors and charge list price and labour...... Again MONSTER
And yet Tesco are the honest people here.
Big thanks to @mick_r for the suggestion of side hinged doors which had never occurred to me. I suppose because hardly anyone has them! Don’t see any round here anyway…except mine now!

Less than £400 off ebay from the Garage Door King (who else?😊)
Fitted with much assistance from my ex-wife’s bloke in under 2 hours (well, he did it, I did the removing of the busted up&over).
Perfect fit, easy when you know how. Certainly won’t be any security issues, for those gnashing their teeth at a 400 quid door. (I’ll probable add a shackle lock for when I go away).
Happy. Now to turn it into a decent bike store slash workshop.
That's the same as the cheap one I fitted but mines grey. Reinforce the lock plate at the rear if you can it twists very easily. Also the 2 shoot bolts work much better if you fit a strip of metal Infront of the hole you have drilled into frame/floor.
If you want to keep it clean get some car polish on it the spray and wipe stuff is great for cleaning doors
And the opposite of Desperates DIY experience, which was a big win, congrats. Here was my garage door company experience. Detail listed below but took almost 12 months for stock to arrive (during covid) I should have gone to The King! But despite that I am very happy. Good quality, not insulated but easy to DIY if I want. Have air piston things so they open slowly on their, own once handle engaged, and lock open so no blatting about in the wind. Solid door, fitting was a painless process with the local company, and despite the hideousness of paying 2k for a door, very happy with the results.

I almost bought grey, but it was an extra £50! 😀
