My Mac Air has gone nuts all down one side, in a strip about 2 inches wide. Apparently dead pixel.
Any ideas how to repair or cost of repair? Really do not want to go direct to Apple as I know they will screw me over with price. Am based near Taunton, so if you know of any decent repairers that'd be grand.
How old is your mac air? Sounds a bit more than a dead pixel...
Have you tried an SMC reset and all the other stuff ?

Also, there's a list of apple certified repair centres on their website - dunno if they are usually cheaper than apple themselves or not. I've had our local one do work on an out of warranty machine and they were pretty good (not in Taunton though).
Have you tried googling if you can replace them ? I've recently done a HP Envy 17.3" screen. That was £90 just for the screen, but was relatively easy to do - just take your time.
Ideally, look at someone local and 'google reviews' or local recommendations via the village facebook site.
Here is the issue, I pinged it over to a friend and he said it could be dead pixel...

Sorry Jim, it is from 2013. Not tried the SMC reset etc. I'll give that a go. Cheers

I suggest finding an alternative source of technical advice in the future.
There's a few things that could cause that, most likely is a cracked ribbon cable.
Easy fix Cougar?
You could give these guys a call. I think they know their shizzle: Mac Upgrades Cambridge
You can post your machine up to them and they'll do likewise.

No idea on a Mac I'm afraid, gods only know what fruity things are going on in there. I've heard tell that on some models swapping a hard drive is Dealer Service Only. In the PC world it'd usually involve about a hundred small screws, some fiddly cable routing and a degree of patience. And possibly a couple of rude words.
Assuming it's a) possible to disassemble in a sensible manner, b) the cable isn't moulded into the screen or something stupid and c) a replacement cable is actually available to buy then theoretically, yes, it should be straight-forward. (-:
And as I said though there's a few things that it could be, it's just that the cable is most likely as it goes through mechanical strain as you open and shut the lid. Timing control board failure could cause that sort of symptom also, and failure of the actual screen itself. Probably other stuff too. For this reason alone I'd be tempted to take it somewhere that can do an actual diagnosis rather than attempt a DIY. Or buy an external monitor.
Oh, one thing you could try - does the pattern change if you open / close the lid, or if you knock on the back of it? That would point heavily towards it being the cable rather than Something Else.
Cheers Cougar. Unfortunately the pattern stays the same with a gentle press or closing the screen.
Gribble, I'll give those guys a call, thanks for that.
Looks like 2014 onwards are covered on ifixit
