Daughter has just dropped her tablet and boshed the screen. We're on holiday so can't do anything about it until we get home.

I assume that it is repairable as the tablet is still functioning from what I can make out from the 10% that I can see. Approx how much to get it replaced (Samsung)? Need to give her some indication. Not going to attempt it myself.

A holiday without a tablet feels like a golden opportunity too good to miss.

Do you really want to be spending your time on holiday searching the carpet for the tiny screw you dropped?

?

No. That's why I'm not doing it and waiting until we get home.

A new one is "only" £110 if a repair is uneconomical. I was just wondering how much a repair was likely to be.

She takes pictures of things with it and then copies them in to a sketch book. Sadly the "Norfolk 2021" volume isn't going to progress past page 1 unless she changes her drawing technique. She's already enquires about borrowing my phone 😳

Wife paid £80 (iirc) for a new screen on her iphone x last year. Not a genuine apple one, no difference visually, but she thinks it wasn’t quite as responsive as the original.
That was from an actual shop on our local high street, they fitted it.

For the inevitable techno anti-snobbery, what tablets are for on holidays is so that the kids can entertain themselves quietly whent they wake up at 6am and you want to sleep in.

Screen replacements for tablets seem to be about a hundred quid at my local phone repair place. I wouldn't try doing it myself unless I'd watched a video for the exact model I was repairing.

assuming you holidaying in the UK, just find a local repair shop to quote, or CEX to buy a alternative cheap replacement.. hmm I don’t suppose this will happen until Tuesday though, best give her your phone.

Ps. Nice to see her using it to help practice her drawing

If the repair is uneconomical vs just buying a new tablet, might as well have a go at it yourself. Sounds like the screen is actually fine, it’s just the glass (& digitiser that is stuck to it) needs replacing which you can get for about a tenner on eBay. It won’t be hard, just require time & patience as everything is glued together. Probably a guide on iFixit you can follow

I bought a kit of Ebay to replace the display on a 10" Samsung for about £20. It's a bit fiddley, but there are plenty of videos on Youtube showing how to do it.

The hard bit is taking it apart - the kit comes with plastic tools to 'prise' it open - that's the only tricky bit really.

You know they actually have a name? They're called spudgers.

I thought they were so you got to drive between car charges in piece and quiet.

1) check the ifixit guide. Consider what’s involved, decide whether to diy or not
2) get a quote from cex or a local outfit. Some places will give an online quote.
IME had iPhone screen replaced by a guy that drive to my house and did it in an hour on the drive for 60. Tablet feels like it should cost more.
3) sympathise with daughter. Tell her you understand how frustrating this must feel. Explore alternatives, could you try something new to reach the same goal? Maybe that would be fun on holiday. We can get Tablet sorted later. Maybe time to take our drawing equipment out to a beautiful landscape and spend some time drawing by eye. Lookup techniques for perspective and scale (on your phone) to practise with her. Find an independent bookshop for some books on drawing technique to practice whilst on holiday

Update - and despite having a protector on it has cracked again in a number of places! So it’s going back 2mo. He hasn’t dropped or hit it, and he’s 17 so knows how to look after stuff now (sort of).. hopefully they will replace it foc with something of better quality!

Those places never use original parts so it’s always going to be a lottery in terms of quality.
