The house I bought a couple of years ago has an old wooden lean to on the back, it is something that is on a very long list of things that need to be properly dealt with at some point.

Current problem is that some of the beads that hold the glass panes in are rotten. What is in place is 15mm x 15mm. Quick google and that should be source able and enough for a few more years.

Question is really, cheap softwood or would I be better off getting something like oak. what I see in place looks like a softwood, and it has probably lasted a good few years but no real idea. It would be painted anyway, so the consideration is merely durability.

I'd go softwood.

I swear i replied to this.

Is this cheap single panes held in place with softwood frame inside and softwood beading outside?

I would putty them in.

Paintable and eliminates water traps making the whole caboodle last longer.

yes cheap single glazed. construction seems to be 5x3cm ish wood frame with the wooden beading on inside and outside. No recess or similar into which the glass sits. the inside is ok, just the outside has seen better days in a few corners.

Putty is not without its problems as it needs to skin over for a couple of weeks and then be painted otherwise it peels away from the glass allowing the frame to rot, something that gets overlooked by painters on refurb jobs who are understandably not keen on making a return visit just to do this. Not a problem in your situation though.

Beads are better in hardwood, the bottom bead in particular gets brutalised by the sun and rain. The hardwood that the trade uses is Meranti. It is only slightly more durable than pine and takes paint poorly. Personally I use a lot of douglas fir for windows and doors as it is fairly durable and not a tropical rainforest timber.
