I gave my very old iPod nano to my young son and it has become his favourite thing ever, unfortunately it has now died ( battery pooped)! Is there something I can get him, fairly cheap as a replacement which is modern and we can put music on, if it’s got solitaire on too then that would be amazing? Cheers in advance for any help, I’m a desperate dad with a very upset son!!
I use iPhone 6s for my music needs as it’s the last one with a headphone socket.
128gb is usually less than £40
Thanks but didn’t really want to go down the phone route, I’m thinking more modern version of a Walkman, just plays music with headphones and maybe a couple of simple games etc. cheers
Larry - you’ve got mail
A phone without a SIM care is basically an iPod anyway.
Jump on CEX and get an old working iPod?
If I use an old iphone without a sim will it still connect to the internet/ wifi as we really don’t want that. I’m so un tech savvy but want my kids to stay off phones until they are at least 40!! 😉
we have a couple of these for our kids
micro sd, wired and Bluetooth, sound quality is fine, my teenage son uses his daily and ive got him into some great music from my hard drive: rhcp, gorillaz, prodigy, white stripes. .
Can you find a local place that can swap the battery? I've an old iPod that I'd like to rejuvenate but the battery is absolutely shot...haven't looked at replacing it but think I'll try that.

Only if you connect it.

You do realise that there are cheap adapters for Lightning to 3.5mm that allow the use of chorded headphones, which have been around for years, the Apple ones are £9.99, others are available from Amazon, the use of which allows you to play lossless files. I use Apple EarPods, Røde NTH-100 studio headphones, and a variety of different high-end IEM’s using those exact adapters. Apple EarPods can also be had with either Lightning or USB-C connectors, for the princely sum of £19.95, and they’re worth every penny, I use them a lot, their only issue is the lack of background noise reduction, but I’m not really bothered about that, when the ‘phones are so cheap.
Snowsky mini? £50. Retro looks.
Many modern ‘DAPs’ are aimed at ‘audiophile’ types and cost a chunk (Astell & Kearns for example) but there are plenty of cheaper things from the likes of FiiO, Hiby, etc that can be bought for £50-£200.
or you can get the batteries replaced in most old iPods. Some are easy to do yourself - the classics. Batteries, of varying and unknown quality, can be found in all sorts of places. You can even upgrade with iFlash adapters for more storage.
many old, and refurbished, iPods can be gotten from CEX and eBay as folks have said.
good luck
a few online searches and you’ll be down the rabbit hole in no time.
