Just had a quote for replacing 5 units.

4 off 850 x 550 in toughened Low E glass.

1 off 1150 x 550 in regular glass.

All of them leaded.

£500

Is this reasonable?

Dunno about the price but some if not all units are a peice if cake to replace yourself. There's a plastic beading around the inside: pop that out with a thin flat blade (think pallette knife) all the way round and the sealed unit comes out easily from the inside. Worth a look...?

Price was fitted into our hardwood frames.

Not doing it myself.

If you go down the DIY route and there is a problem later on you may have no come back/ins cover.
My neighbour found this out over the winter to his cost 🙄

Into hardwood, making good, not a bad price, they'll be making some money, but you've got to pay for skillz, innit. I think I'd be paying 50-70 ish per unit, trade, depending on the complexity of the leading.

Thanks.

Thought it sounded good but I wanted to check. They are doing me a deal because they are doing the cat home just up the road so are working in our area already.

I paid 240 quid for 6 units fitted myself. That was in upvc so it's dead easy. Took me about half an hour to do.

Wooden frames and crap access from sloping first floor roof.

I'll pay somebody else who isn't going to fall off his ladder thankyouverymuch.

I would imagine it'll all be done from the inside.... If not, think how easily burglars could get into your windows... 🙂

It isn't. The beading on the ancient oak framed windows on the 1st floor is on the outside. I checked.

If it's ancient oak there might be a preservation order on it...

There isn't.

It's not that ancient... but it isn't modern either.

Anyhow. Enough of the construction of my house. I just wanted to know if £500 was reasonable and apparently it is.

you should MTFU and replace them yourself. Whilst you're at it, you should start baking your own bread, too. it's much healthier and won't make your kids obese.

Steady on there shorty or the shock pump gets it.

I would if they weighed 50 kg and the washing machine was on the roof.

If they are hardwood then they might not have handy pop in/out beading like UPVC, so the comparison might be a bit skewed. If they have to take out beading they run the risk of splitting it etc, then there is whatever they are sealed with, Putty ? Suddenly £500 doesnt seem a lot.
I'd still do it myself, but thats because I like doing stuff like that.

There was nothing meant by the abuse. Terrahawk was just entering into the current spirit of STW by trying to start a fight. 😉

On the was home I shall scrape his car with his own shock pump and wee in his silly white shoes.

Brief diversion from manlove and back on topic. This thread prompted me to sort my 3 units that have started to sweat a bit:

1 x 1150x550 Toughened
1 x 1150x1400 Toughened
1 x 1150x1000 Normal

£400 inc VAT. I think that's about the same as yours per m2 but mine isn't leaded. Apparently it should come out around £70/m2 plus VAT.
