I went out riding today and used Endomondo on my HTC Wildfire to track the route. The ride was about two hours and when I stopped my phone, which had been fully charged before, was telling me to charge as I only had 10%left.

I know that using GPS and mobile internet canes the battery so I was thinking about getting a larger battery to use when out riding.

I saw THIS on ebay and wondered if anyone has one or can suggest something similar to use?

Cheers all 🙂

cant imagine its borked. the wildfire is only a year old so the battery cant be that old can it?

what does it say is using the battery?

i used my wildfire on the Dyfi, and put in a shockingly awful time 😉

I set "my tracks" running, then once it had found itself using the 3g, i put it onto airplane mode, which prevents all traffic, just lets the gps do its thing (which is fine once it had found itself)

i got 6 hrs out of it, and it wasnt below about 30% when we got back.

you could try lowering the gps refresh rate?
if the internet is still turned on, lower the refresh rate on things like ****ter and facebork?

cant see why that battery you posted wouldnt work though!

Ah now airplane mode sounds like it could be quite sensible, lowering the refresh is a bit greek to me so I reckon some well intended fiddling is in order 😉

How do I see what is using the battery?

Can you tell I've not had the phone long lol

ah ok. its not your battery then if its new.

when it displays "battery low" mine gives me a "battery use" button, which tells you what process have been using power.

Top culprits

Wifi will CHEW through it, looking for networks if it hasnt got one. turn it off unless you need it on, the easiest way is to put the switch widget on the screen.

The same goes for bluetooth.

you can also change how often the phone goes onto the net, and looks at facebook and ****ter to see if anything is new, so that it can provide you with notifications.

menu > settings > accounts and sync

you can set it to anything from 5 mins to 1 day. how fussed are you about FB? mine came at 15 mins i seem to remember, and i upped it to an hour.
you can also turn off stuff you never use (stocks and shares for instance)

there is a power manager widget, that enables you to toggle off indiviual items from the home page, and even lower the brightness on the screen to save juice.

I suggest you go

Menu> settings> about phone> battery > battery use

and check whats been using power, and report back for more specific guidance if you want 🙂

get an app called systempanel. The battery on my motorola defy was going from full to dead in less than 10 hours of relatively light usage.
Once I checked out this app I could see that 1 app/widget were causing my phones CPU to run at max output the whole time. I removed the widget and now the phone lasts around 2 days.
What I mean is it might not just be endomondo and GPS that is causing the battery to drain so quickly.
What I've done on mine is set up one of the profiles as Bike and that set up has no widgets on any screens and just has power and music controls and viewranger shortcut on the home page. I turn the wifi and auto updates off. From full I'm generally left with 60% after a 3-4 hour ride.

So does that mean that the widgets you have on your screen drain battery power whether you are actively using them?

They shouldn't do, but you occasionally get a badly written app.

get a usb power supply - 5V battery pack that plugs into the usb port to act as a fake charger.

also, if youre that way inclined, look at rooting your phone and flashing a custom rom? some roms dont use all the 'sense' gubbins that use battery (basic android). you can also use an app called 'setcpu' to change the frequencies on the phone. depends how deep you go into it. im doing that now with my desire to try and get better battery, as mines shocking.

plenty of advice on androidforums. helped me out no end.
