Our bathroom window will not lock or close properly and after fiddling around with the handle shaft the locking mechanism appears to be completely seized.
Has anyone had any success with repair or replacement of this without replacing the whole window? The rest of it has plenty of life left so I'd rather keep it going if I can.
Yes, I think the handle part is reasonably standard and should be available from the likes of B&Q. Held on with 2 screws.
The bit inside the window / along the edge that turns the twist on the handle into the required bits sliding to lock the window seems to have a couple of designs, depending on who made the windows. Your local PVC window fitter may have the right style, or you might need to trawl ebay for one that matches.
I was hopeful that the problem lay in the handle so tried replacing that but no joy. The window is a top hinge half height window opening outwards so really awkward to get to this bit. Might try taking a little video on the phone to see if I can spot any serial numbers etc ...
Yes. Replacement handles can be had from Screwfix, Wickes etc. Unscrew old one, bin it, and fasten new handle with two screws/bolts.
You may encounter difficulty if there's nothing for the screw/bolt to grab onto. One hole was pretty mangled so had to use a rivnut.
Yep, bought a new lock module from the locksmith at the end of our road, just swapped it out from the outside.
Was very impressed as the window is over 20 years old, but locksmith had the part in stock...

Yep simple fix when window opens. I have a window mechanism to replace but it broke when the window was closed so I cannot get it openedto replace it. Grrrr....
Thanks all. I think that I'm going to have to remove the top window (sash?) so that I can get to the lock mechanism as it's on the first floor and I can't get to it from the outside.
Next question: how to avoid dropping a 2' x 3' uPVC window through the roof of the kitchen below? Time to break out the old climbing kit I reckon ...

Bend a spoke 90 degrees, place it flat against the sash then push it down between the sash and the frame. Twist it 90 degrees then use it to pull the locking point open, takes a few goes but it’s relatively easy.
See my thread on replacing window friction hinges.
Is it lock with integral handle? Screwfix sell them with a cut to length spindle in fridge white.
