The paint on the garage floor has more or less gone now, so I need to repaint

I've got a tin of paint from Screwfix, I've brushed the floor to remove (some of) the dust. Screwfix say don't use sealant, but do I need to do anything to remove the existing paint? Does the floor need to be spotlessly clean? ANything else I need to consider? THinking it'll be a task for this weekend given that it's forecast to rain

I did one last year. Was good fun, satisfying. Usual painting rules apply: remove loose stuff, clean and dust free. I wiped over with a degreaser, white spirit etc. Then just cut in and use a roller on a pole.

Make sure you start at the front and work your way back into a corner...

Don't drive a car on it, lifts the paint off nicely.

Is this non slip paint- always a good idea where oil/grease and other fluids might cause a nasty accident.
Apparently an old method was to sprinkle sand onto the wet paint to provide grip. Never tried that, but I have seen it mentioned a couple of times.

can always seal a concrete floor with diluted PVA. A bit of dust wont really matter.
Ive seen sand mixed into gloss paint for boat decks. A cheap easy method.

I degreased my floor before painting with screwfix garage floor paint and its held fine for 18months from normal wear and tear, I did drop a big adjustable and it left a small dent in the paint, but nothing to worry about.

When I did it I hoovered the floor and just whacked the paint on. Don't over think it, it's not like it's an industrial garage, you're only wheeling bikes in and out of it.

I sealed mine with PVA before painting. Three coats reducing dilution each time. Then painted with two coats of paint and left it for a good 2 weeks. Car has not lifting it yet. Takes a good couple of weeks to fully dry and harden. It took 10 days before the smell of the paint drying went away. If you put your car on it before then then it will lift. Think I used a Johnsons paint. Seemed to be rated the best at the time I was looking.

No cars in the garage, just bikes. All sounds reasonable cheers

sticky bike tyres can lift paint if you don't leave it a good 48 hrs or so to harden.

Did anyone here put a car in their garage? Ever?

I haven’t. Nor at the previous house.

It’s *possible* a car once went in the garage at the house-before-that, but I don’t think it did

I can't even see the floor in my garage, never mind paint it!

My dad's double garage is so full of crap that you couldn't get a Smart car in if you put it through a wood chipper first!

I used https://regalpaint.co.uk/floor-paint 4 years ago.

Best range of colours - 13.

Rollered the floor with diluted pva as a sealer.

Rollered a coat of Regal Prime & Seal.

Rollered 2 coats of Ford Tractor Blue quick dry floor paint (Still took a couple of weeks to harden off).

Been down 4 years - cycles, motorbikes and other general traffic, workshop things - Lawn mower repairs, wood working etc, etc.

None has lifted and still has a shine to it. (Have to admit to mopping it over from time to time)

Yes. Not every day - though previously used to, but tend to if we're out of the house for a week or more on holiday. Not worried about the car as such, but people breaking in the house for keys for the car which is the main reason for house break ins...and insurance is a bit cheaper if you have a garage that is able to take a car. Usually it is full of clutter like most garages, but I can clear the clutter quickly to the stage where I can put the car in if needed. Bikes hang on walls, lots of hooks and shelves around for everything else.

I’m just having a new garage built so reading with interest.

In that case then decide what covering you want on the floor before you do anything. Ideally I'd have liked an epoxy coating but had already sealed the floor and epoxy coatings need unsealed floors. SO if you think you might want to go that route then do your research.

Well as advised I just brushed the floor clean and got on with it - doing one side at a time and really pleased with it so far.

Painted it on Saturday afternoon after a ride and let it dry overnight. Managed to get the tandem out for a ride on Sunday morning without too much issue, the paint was mostly dry though I did see a couple of places where a stray foot caught the edge and there was a bit of a smear - couldn;t see any paint on shoes / tyres though thankfully. I'll move everything loose over to the painted side and do the other half this coming weekend

If anyone is looking for an alternative, the foam interlocking mats from Halfords/Amazon etc are brilliant. Just pulled mine up to take to the new house. Warm, quiet... considered paint but glad I went with the mats in the end.
