Afternoon all

I've just recently realised my passport runs out towards the end of January so I need to renew it, thing is I live in Norway so it seems it will take a little longer than the usual time if I were in the UK.

I will need my passport until the 25th of November as i'm travelling to Sweden and back and then I planned to travel to the UK for Christmas (likely just before the 25th December) and then back to Norway just after new year. The way I see it i've three options.

1) Risk sending off for a new one while in Norway and hope it arrives back in time for me to travel home for xmas.

2) Spend 2-3 weeks at home in the UK over xmas and new year and send off for a new passport whilst there

3) Travel back to Norway after new year and send off for a new passport once i'm back home and know I definitely won't need it.

Questions I have to make a decision are - Does anyone have any real world times of how long passport renewal might take from abroad? (Gov website says 4-6 weeks). Do you think the border controls in the EU/Norway will net me back in to the country if I only have a few weeks left before my passport expires?

Personally I'd be looking at the same day or 1 week service while you are in the country. Costs a premium but...

I've done the same day service once. A day hanging around Newport was nice. Should've taken my MTB and headed up to Cwmcarn...

When I lived in Norway (almost 20 years ago mind) my identity card also had my passport number on it. If this is still the case then renewing while in the UK on a fast renewal might cause issues as the card / passport don't match.

Mine took about a week to Germany.

Do it all online, then send the old passport and signed declaration on the most convenient day.

Had a similar situation a couple of years ago as I live in Ireland. What I did was visit the embassy and got a 12 month extension on my expiring passport. This was easy and just required a call to make an appointment, turn up and they stamped the passport and gave me a letter stating it was extended. I used this for the next while with no issues at airports etc. Then when I next went home to UK I got my new passport via the post office and the passport check and send and had it within a week.

Edit. Scrap what I said. I just googled it and it seems the have stopped they extensions since I got mine.

Had to do mine when I lived in Germany. Rang the UK Consulate in Bonn and they sent me an application form which i duly filled in and returned. I had a new passport about 3 days later. No drama and much quicker than when done in the UK.

@welshfarmer they have changed the rules. My passport before the current one I was able to get from the embassy in Düsseldorf. Now it has to be done in th UK. My latest one took about a week using the online registration.
