I’ve a 4 year old top that is in excellent nick but smells like someone’s died in it.

It’s got to the stage where I’ll not wear it as it contaminates other clothes. I think it’s learning!

I’ve purchased the teq-wash stuff but to no avail.

Any good tips other than nuke from space?

Biotex. Soak.

Although I wear Merino mostly to avoid the problem in the first place.

I'll give the biotex soaking a whirl.

It's my commuter top and really comfy. Will get a Merino top when I've some money in the bank.

Most of the problem is down to cool washes, which are not hot enough to kill the bacteria that cause malodour and polypropylene and other polymers will absorb odour molecules very readily. The wash needs to be over 60c, but that might not be very good for your polypropylene top.

Currently I have a few bits in the washing machine right now with similar issues, thought I'd try that new fangled dettol wash stuff. I'll report back as to whether it has been successful or not once dried and worn.

Halo does it for me. It's rescued the Smelly Hellys that I've been using for the last 15 years for running, ski touring and biking.

Just wash it in Assos Active Wear Cleaner. Incredibly effective. Looks really expensive but you only need a teaspoonful for a small load, and I only use it on the really smelly loads anyway so it lasts ages.

Napisan. Cheap and available on all good nappy/baby stuff aisles in supermarkets.

I'm afraid I slagged off Halo for years.
Then I actually tried it. 😐

Sorry everyone, it's actually very good.

Hang the offending items out on the washing line for a day, works for all our stuff.

Isn't sticking it in the freezer supposed to work? (According to Beardy McAxerson anyway)

(I accept no responsibility if your frozen chips end up smelling of armpit)

Hydrogen Peroxide.

Put a cup in your wash with your riding gear. It's a natural bleach and kills all the bacteria.

You can get it on Ebay for a fraction of the price of equivalent Halo etc, in 5 litre drums, last for ages and works perfectly.

Dabbing the offensive areas with white wine vinegar and then chucking some in the wash cured my smelly hellys...

Freezer might work. Finns do their spring cleaning in winter so they can hang bedding and curtains etc outside in freezing temperatures - kills smells.

There's an anti-bacterial Vanish you can either put in the washing machine or use to pre-soak clothes. Works for me.

I'll try the soak with various things first.

Must admit I've never soaked it. Thought if I just shouted at it while it was in the machine it would button up and fly right.

Have to ride home in it tonight and I think I can smell it from the office cellar. It's started to contaminate my office. Good thing I work alone!

I remember this being mentioned before and I looked for it at the time in my local Asda and I couldn't find it 🙁

Your story has touched me like none other.

I am having a bad day (anxiety attack at work this morning mixed with paranoid thoughts about the senior managers), but that line made me chuckle.

You're not the only one, tried all sorts of other things but halo was the only one that works really well and is just as straight forward as a normal wash.

You can also get powder for removing smell from reusable nappies - although it ruined the pu membrane on the outer nappies so don't use it on waterproofs. There's also a Milton antibac liquid for laundry.

Nappies have a pu membrane?

This makes me happy.

UV kills all bacteria so wash normally and line dry in the sun. No more smell

Napisan and line drying in the sun usually does it for me.

Has anyone tried that new Deltol Laundry liquid advertised on telly lately? Claims to kill 99.9% of bacteria (evan at 15 degree's) which as we all know is the source of the nasty wiffs!
