I need to re-paint some external walls and there's a lot of old, flaking paint that needs removing. Apparently a wire brush will damage the brick facing but I don't know if the previous person did this before, and also if I'm painting it again does it matter?

Jet washer has been suggested but will it do a good enough job? Its going to be painting on to bricks and don't want to see the edges of the old flakes underneath the new paint. Any tips? I want this job to be minimal hassle so don't mind renting a decent pressure washer if it saves time.

I've seen jet washing used but it's fairly messy even on a still day. It'll take any loose paint off, though.

If you don't want to see edges of flakes then you'd need to take it back to brick or use something more like a render than a paint?

I have a wall that still has some old whitewash / paint and came to the following conclusions:

1 its a pain to get off!

There are 3 methods:

1 Wire brush (slow but should not damage anything)
2, Pressure washer - fast but effective - messy
3, Pressure washer with a sand blasting attachment - more effective quick but more messy
4, Pin gun - noisy / messy but effective - its an air tool that fires captive pins at the wall to agitate the paint off

There is no easy way!

Hope this helps!
