I have little interest in 'tech', so would appreciate wisdom for that is likely a simple question with a very simple answer please.

We have to be away from home for a day next week at an event with Jnr, but Mrs B will have to continue working for a few hours - needs access to work emails and access to works systems.

So...is it as simple as tethering her laptop to iphone and using 4G rather than home wifi/ethernet.

Also, what does a MiFi router (e.g. Huawei E5577) actually do..???

Thanks - much appreciated.

Easiest way I find is to set up a Mobile Hotspot from your phone and connect to that - pull down from the top on android and it's there, no idea on apple...

Yes just try it first though to make sure that the works IT security settings allow it.

Iphone

Settings ->Mobile Data -> Personal Hotspot (on) -> Allow others to Join -> and then search for the wifi network on the laptop and connect to it.

Make sure you have a big enough data package on your phone, and that the battery is full or can be charged as using wifi hotspot does eat through the battery on an iphone

They are to be used in houses where you do not have wired internet available ie through a phone socket or direct fibre. In essence they router with a SIM card inside. They do need plugging in to a mains supply

Yes; it's as simple as that. Tethering your iPhone creates a 'personal hotspot' that your laptop's WiFi can connect to. I would recommend testing it works *before* you go. Some corporate firewalls/vpn's will refuse to connect over a personal hotspot.

a MiFi router; essentially takes a sim card and connects to the 4/5G network the same as your phone; but it's got a 'proper' WiFi chipset and acts as a normal access point - which is a bit more compatible; but more importantly; it means that one person isn't on the hook to stay in the same place if a bunch of you are using an internet connection via the mobile network !

yes, just hotspot your phone to your laptop (your phone is basically a wifi enabled internet network). I do this for gigs where the hotel network is rubbish and I need to download a song (wedding DJ) and I'm not tech savy

You can do this now and test it works before heading out into the wilds, just watch your data allowance/consumption so no surprise bills in a months time

I'm on 4g for my home as no landline.

If your phone has good 4g speed your sorted.

Just go on Google and type speed test

Works fine, but plug your phone in as it eats battery life. And data of course.

As above.
If she's using Outlook it may refuse to connect until you click OK on the warning about being on a "metered connection". I was sat wondering why an email wouldn't send the other day until I noticed it.

Yes. No 4G portable router/MiFi device is required. It does chew phone battery though, so bring a battery pack/portable charger thingy.

Use the charging cable to connect to the pc, it’s generally faster than using wifi between devices & will keep the phone charged while you do so.

Definitely test beforehand, we had a internet outage the other day & my wfh wife couldn’t work because her new phone needed a update downloading before she could use it for tethering.

That's more likely to be blocked by a laptop that has corporate restrictions on it. Mine will only talk to an encrypted usb stick but I've not tried it for a while and have heard even that's been turned off. The only way to get files from a work phone to the laptop is either email them, or set up onedrive on both devices to sync.
