Moving lender for remortgaging, do we need to get a solicitor involved?

Yes but it's an easy job so should be cheap . The solicitor who bought the house should be the first port of call as they have already checked the title when they did the purchase so they only really need a quick look at the charge certificate to see what has happened since and to discharge the old loan and register the new.

You can't do it yourself as the lender needs a solicitor to promise to pay off the old loan and secure theirs. If you did it yourself the lender would be at risk of you not paying off the old loan and just banking/running off with their cash. Lenders don't take that risk.

You may find your new mortgage will pay the legal fees or nominate and pay the solicitor.
