Since I have known him from the early 80's, Nick has struggled with his own stuff including attempts to take his own life combined with long spells in psychiatric wards interspersed with other outdoor adventures.
I've canoed with him many a time and we have done some crazy trips together. Nick has made the sport his passion and it's literally saving his life. He is recognising his contribution as a mental health advocate and regaining his self worth amongst other things.

Ps. It’s a kayak…
<pedant mode> All kayaks are canoes. Not all canoes are kayaks.
What's the difference between a Canoe and Kayak? Well the difference is relatively simple; it’s related to athlete’s position in the boat and the type of paddle they use to propel the boat.
In a kayak, the paddler is seated and uses a double-bladed paddle pulling the blade through the water on alternate sides to move forward.
In a canoe, the paddler kneels and uses a single-bladed paddle to propel the boat forward.
He popped up randomly on my Twitter feed a few weeks back and been following since. Definitely one of the better accounts on there.
