I need to get a new window for a rental property I own. It's quite a large span window (floor to ceiling) at w3320 x h2490. The current window is split into several 'panels' including a couple of casement parts, so it's not a single glass pane. A trusted builder has come back with an initial quote of £2435 + VAT for the reinforced UPVC window unit only, which seems quite steep, albeit it he only contacted one firm for a quote for now (it's nearly £5k all in with fitting, scaffolding and VAT!) Window needs to be reinforced due to width over 1800mm. I've had quotes for Aluminium windows for another job (personal) and thinking about Alu for this window. My question is, do Aluminimum windows need to be reinforced like UPVC, or are they inherently strong enough to not need it? Online advice seems a bit vague and sales focused. Current window (not fitted by me) is clearly not reinforced as it's super flexy and looks pretty unsafe to me!
Aluminum may also need reinforcement, it can deflect a lot. I remember installing a 6m aluminum box section, 15 x 10 cm was amazed at the amount of deflection in that. When I made conservatories a lot of the longer aluminum structural pieces had steel inserts for strength.
Can't imagine aluminum coming in cheaper than reinforced UPVC anyway.
