We've recently bought unlimited cinema membership for the next three months. We chose Odeon as there are 3 of them fairly close by, two are 10-15 min drive away, the third is in Edinburgh. But two of this week's bigger releases, Femme with George McKay and Eileen with Ann Hathaway aren't on at any of them. We'd have to go to Glasgow, Dundee or Dunfermline to see either. Is this a blip or are odeon a bit rubbish? They seem to be showing lots of older Christmas films just now so is it the time of year?
Both are quite niche, so there are likely to be limited showings because there just won’t be the demand. Also given the economics of showing films they may not be shown until a few weeks after they’ve been released in order to make it economically viable.
Did you not check what was coming up before buying the passes?
Femme seems a bit highbrow and Eileen similar. Eileen is only playing at 3 Odeons in the whole of London.
Are you more of a Picturehouse/arthouse consumer? Odeon is primarily for the mass market - I don't think it's any better or worse than Vue.
Not really, the other option is Cineworld or possibly Vue but they're not as easy to get to and one of the reasons for doing it was so we could go midweek on the spur of the moment without having to travel too far.
PictureHouse is my nationwide cinema chain of choice. i have two of their cinemas near me. one has pretty crap sound(Dukes). You can sit and watch for a couple of hours and not have heard a word. The other (komedia) is tip top!
Sofas and plenty of leg room... and beer...
They do generally show more arty flicks but the big films do get a look in. Their programmes are more varied daily, not just several weeks of the same crap.
If we go to the cinema (can't abide them myself, but the Mrs wants to go occasionally) we tend to go to an Odeon.
The seats are great. Everything else is utter garbage. Even the showings for blockbusters seem weird at times. Ordering system for food/drink takes way longer than just going to the counter and getting served. And without fail, I don't think I've had a worse pint. Anywhere
Food and drink?
Why do people need to eat their dinner while watching a film anyway? If anything ruins a cinema trip for me it's some munching on a foot long smelly hot dog or crunching their way though half a kilo of cheesy nachos or slurping on a litre of diet coke.
Just eat before or after. I know there are some long films out now but there's no danger of starvation or dehydration.
Yeah, food and drink (apart from Butterkist and a Slush Puppee) at cinemas is always going to be rubbish.

And the inevitable trips to the toilet during the film as they empty their buckets of coke

Bet that livens up the experience no end!
Do they meet the hookers in there too?

Honestly films are getting so long now, that toilet breaks feel almost mandatory. Seen two films in the last 5 days (Anatomy of a Fall; amazing, and Napoleon; not amazing) and both were over two and half hours. Bucket of coke or not, that's a long time to hold it in.
If south Edinburgh is handy, Eileen is on at the Dominion in Morningside. Classic building, bit different venue to more modern cinemas.
Yep been to the Dominion many times over the years but just wanted to give membership a go for a bit, give ourselves a chance to see more films without it costing a fortune.
This has reminded me how back in the day they would actually pause the film halfway through (old cameras only able to hold certain roll length?) and people would come round selling ice creams and snacks etc

That's in no way a new thing.
Battle of the Bulge is 212minutes!
What's happened is you have got old.

...and now it's Battle of the Bladder! 🙂
Love long films.
Love intermissions more.
That’s also the right time to have your snack/drink… not during key bits of dialogue or suspense building silence.
Yes, I have got too old.

Oh, OP, yes, Odeon do seem to avoid left field films. Even Vue does far better in that regard in my experience… even showing concert films with baked in small audiences (Eg LCD Soundsystem). Others do better still. We’re lucky to have a few independents around here, so an annual ticket to just one outlet wouldn’t make sense here at all.

I tend to eat before the cinema (pub)
But - if I do get food beforehand (maybe nachos before the film), the frigging adverts are plenty long enough to eat a 3 course meal before the film starts. Another reason why I hate cinemas
