It looks abit of a minefield. Justhost is offering a "free" domain name but its hard to see their T&C's and I don't want to end up registering a name then find out its not really mine/only renting the rights then two years down the line...well.

So, any recommendations, tips. Places to start? 🙂

You don't need to use your ISP, you can use any old registration company but for me it's easier to keep it all in one place. Use any reputable hosting company and you'll be fine.

.co.uk's are generally a couple of quid for a two year registration, .com's about a tenner. Most hosting packages include a handful of free registrations.

DONT use an online check to see if the domain is free until you are ready to buy or you run the risk of it being registered a few days later by some tosser trawling the logs. It happens.

Not 1and1.

I would think it will be your domain still with justhost, I would guess the T&C are more likly to say you have to re-register through them after 2 years for which they charge you 10 times the going rate.

To make life easiest you want to be registering with the same place you have your webspace. So pick a good host and take it from there.

I recommend Fuzioned.com, cheap reliable and you can actually deal with he same person each time you contact them.

... and there's the rub. I recommend 1&1. I guess it depends on your level of interaction and therefore requirement. I've never needed to talk to anyone at 1&1 as the control panels do it all promptly. With previous hosts I've come up against stuff which needed support interaction and that's where it all goes wrong. There's plenty of independant reviews out there.

like these.

And good luck trying to leave, I hope you realise you have signed up to be billed for life, this is the AOL of web hosting.

You have to pay for the a years hosting up front not monthly. They're excellent hosting providers though, the domain is yours for 2 years nearing the end of that you can renew it and even after it's expired the rights remain with your for a short time.

Wise words indeed Digimap, I wish somebody had told me that before I went and set my company up, it wasn't absolutely essential to have the exact domain name I wanted but it's a real pain just waiting for it to become available.
