You can get a refurbished MacBook on eBay for 250 quid, with upgraded RAM and a SSD. They put new cases on them too, and it came with the latest OS all installed

I bought one (as Mrs Binners kept nicking my MacBook Pro) and it was absolutely indistinguishable from a brand spanking new machine. It’s been running brilliantly for 12 months now and is used all day, every day. Her work PC laptop hasn’t been looked at since

Coagar - You’d have a coronary if I told you how much my MacBook Pro cost! 😀

Grtdkad - there’s a few places doing them, but i’ll Dig out the eBay details tomorrow, of the one I bought, and post it up. Couldn’t recommend them highly enough. Like I said, indistinguishable from a brand new Mac.

Got me some serious brownie points, that did!

I've been looking at the tier1 outlet store on ebay after seeing someone on here bought a laptop from them a while ago.

My problem is justifying it as I only need it to play Football Manager as my current laptop is no longer up to it! They must sell and absolute heap of them and of the ones I've been 'watching' they tend to go for the lowest price around tea time - I guess because people are too busy tucking in to their mince and tatties to be bidding on ebay.

What spec?
If you have link that would be good too - I need a new laptop and fancy a MacBook.

The guy I got it from on ebay hasn't got any listed at the moment, but there are similar specced ones up.

Spec is

Apple MacBook RE-CASED 13.3" Unibody, 2.26Ghz, 120GB SSD 4Gb Ram, BT Wifi DVD-R

Which is more than adequate for what she's using it for, and it was £290, not £250. Still a bargain for what looks and feels like a brand new Mac

yeah the actual chip and generation would be useful, or even the age though the DVD drive probably is a clue...

Well the other info would be really useful to tell if it's a relic or something more modern, the performance difference between a core2duo and i7 1st gen or i3 7th gen etc is huge....

I don't even know what that means

Nor do I want too.

So I'll just leave you to it.....

Any reason why something like a Mac Book (refurb'd obvs) and a stonking great external hard drive wouldn't work for someone that only needs occasionaly browsing/typing/trainerroad/photo use?

suspect it might be later, actually, if it's got sierra or high sierra on it?

what is the spec binners, actually curious.

was looking at older refurb imacs the other day, 2011 27in i5 2nd gen, can be had for about £550 these days, which is still a very decent machine. processor still scores 5k+ on cpu benchmark.

The 500 quid I spent on a dell inspiron 7 years ago does all of that without even spinning the fans too hard...

I'm sure it does, but my thinking is having the Mac Book for 95% of the time then just connecting to the HD when required

Well can't answer as it will depend on the min specs and age of the macbook.
For binners (and others) https://www.cpubenchmark.net/laptop.html
Why processor speed isn't much of an indication these days

Min specs for trainer road etc are really low
