Garage door contact sensor gets damaged by rain coming under the door when it's really wet despite it being "heavy duty" and garage door specific.
any reason why I can't mount the next one vertically ion the wall rather than horizontally on the floor?

No reason at all. It's just a simple reed switch and magnet, like in your bike computer pickup.

I'd get a non garage door specific one from RS or the like. Probably be tougher and better waterproofed
