You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
As above, really gutted but as Airbus are reducing production by a 3rd I'm expecting official confirmation soon. I've been given notice of redundancy whilst employers discuss with unions etc but I fully expect Broughton to lose circa 1000 staff, 450 agency (me) plus a similar number of core lads, early retirement mostly.
Anyway no point feeling sorry for myself.... when I get the news where should I be looking?
No real advice just wish you all the best.
I'm an engineer for BA in Glasgow so can sympathise with your position. All the best
Dont know, but as a short term earner are supermarkets not in need of drivers ? Spend the day dropping off shopping while listening to the radio. Could be better than day time TV.
I'm still getting emails of teaching vacancies every day. I expect as an engineer you might be able to get some good funding to train as a physics teacher, its not for everyone mind.
Sorry to hear that fella.
I'm in the position where all my work (and income, obviously) has stopped and I've now got to be realistic about when our industry will restart again. No time soon, that's for sure.
I've been looking this week and if you fancy something that is above minimum wage then there's pretty much nothing out there. But it is what it is, so minimum wage is better than nowt
The people who are recruiting are exactly who you'd expect. So supermarkets and delivery companies. That's pretty much it. I'm going to apply for the Post Office this week and see if I have any luck there
Good luck
The railway will need rolling stock and other engineers for the foreseeable, as well as other roles especially operating staff.
How about complete change and joining police? If they are not recruiting now they probably will be soon enough.
Minimum wage is the best I can find at the moment. Currently working at the coop. Waiting to hear about a delivery driver full time job and part time cleaning at Morrisons. BT Openreach were recruiting too which would be a much better full time job.
Anyone in manufacturing where the base product is still in demand but production has stopped or slowed for a month. Eng support functions not so much, but anyone making/testing physical product will still be in demand I think. This definitely describes our business - 11 manufacturing months to deliver a 12 month budget.
A lot of fruit and veg farms are desperate for pickers at the moment. Have a search in your local area. It certainly not aerospace but it will keep money coming in for a while and you'll be outdoors.
Sorry about that, what about taking on a delivery franchise. I met a chap who had a DPD one, paid 1200 to get the uniform and van. Loved it, in fact i think his territory was near wigan. Must be v busy now.
My dept has had three new starters in the past two weeks. Quick check of the corporate site shows there are vacancies in other depts. Automotive and in Brussels. If you can move abroad...
Bummer.
Many supermarkets were asking for more staff as a temporary measure but sure they still are. Or maybe join the NHS for free food and an around of applause.
Train companies are recruiting engineering staff to look after and build all the new trains, eg at Chester Manchester and wrexham, wrexham not yet built as yet. Also Merseyrail/stadler on merseyside.
You got no work at all Binners?
I run a on-man-band print shop and there's been a noticable upturn in enquiries in the last week or so. I'm going in 3 mornings a week now to run jobs out.
It's not a lot, but there are signs of movement.
I'm interviewing tomorrow afternoon via MS Teams. Looking for a multi skilled "reliability engineer" with electrical bias & PLC skills, very secure industry.
On another note I have a commission for Binners, when I get my finger out and select the images I want.
He tried to give me mates rates but I'm not having that and offered real punches on the nose if he didn't charge full price 😉

I can think of no better recruit that Binners - zero chance of pilferage
Put him to work in a Greggs manufacturing facility though, and a "mysterious drop in output" would occur.
Are your skills convertible to pharma?
Loads of jobs especially in Ireland.
Marshalls aerospace might be worth a look (Cambridge) as I think they do work for USAF
I know of quite a few bike shops that are understaffed and potentially recruiting right now... Will be minimum wage, or near enough, but given how busy the bike industry is right now, there's worse ways of keeping busy than working in a bike shop when it's actually busy!
Cheers for a few ideas folks.... despite trying to be upbeat I'm more beat up! Was happily doing 300 miles a week whilst furloughed... not moved off sofa for last couple of days 😥
Merlin cycles are looking for bike mechanics

Recruiting for the foreseeable
I registered for DPD franchise a few weeks ago - wanted to learn more about it, and only way to get more info. was to register. Heard nowt, and can't find a way to contact them anywhere
Some companies are still recruiting, e.g. we've just offered a job to someone which is very odd as we're all working from home and lock down happened mid office move so we have no company premises as we never completed on the new one (no point paying rent for months when you can't use it). The new guy may well have worked for us for quite a while before he meets a single other employee in person!
