One of the Red Arrows planes just flew over us at about 300-500ft - North Nottinghamshire heading due east. I wondered where it’s been and is heading? Maybe a a test flight after maintenance?

Its their new social distancing display team - they're flying in formation but much, much further apart.

They need to maintain flying hours, they posted on FB that they were now flying again to keep hours up. Unusual to see a solo though so your theory may be correct

They're based just down the road from us and this time of year is usually great for some overhead practice demos. Seen a couple here and there but no formations.

Also seen loads of Typhoons and their radar planes (Sentry?) buzzing around, which are based at Warrington.

The flyby is probably going to be the most exciting thing that happens in the village this year. The last big event was when a dog was stood on the roof of the Co-op🙂

i guess the Typhoons and Sentry’s might be having to keep an eye on the Russian military planes that enter UK airspace(?)

I keep checking flightradar24 on my phone when I see a big high altitude jet given how rare they are at the moment, that's been twice in the last few weeks I've seen the QRA Voyager tanker on its way back to Brize Norton after loops off Fraserburgh (I'm just outside Aberdeen).

I'm guessing that was an auto correct and should have read Waddington, Lincolnshire

Noticed the Voyager too, just to the East of us over the Pennines. A few survey planes flying around backwards and forwards North West England and North Wales this morning. Maybe they're just standing out more.

Still a fair bit of big military stuff flying around here from Fairford just down the road and Brize a bit further still. A400Ms are around pretty regularly, there was a B2 the other week I was on a call last week when a U2 flew past the window...

Currently got a survey plane doing laps over Stourbridge, don't think it’ll be google maps as that was updated last year, I’ve made myself obvious in the garden

Yesterday had 3 jets fly East to West at 12:55, couldn’t see them, just their contrails that looked like Adidas stripes across the sky, nothing on Flightradar24

My BiL is an RAF pilot and his current tour is as an instructor - or rather an instructor of instructors. Not flown since lockdown and no plans to get started any time soon. Currently 'working from home'. Basically on leave. I'm surprised that, even for political brownie points purposes, they have not found them something more useful to do.

Yep, I saw those 3 contrails yesterday too, quite near Telford. Too high to see anything with the naked eye, but they were reasonably loud considering they were at twelfty thousand feet. Something flew back east a bit later, much lower, but it'd gone before I had a chance to get the binoculars. Not that I'd have recognised it anyway, other than saying "Not a Typhoon"

Boss's nephew is Red 9 and is on his third or fourth Reds tour. He's previously been Synchro Leader (Red 6), Synchro Pair (Red 7) and Red 5. I've seen all kinds of awesome photos taken by the team photographer and my boss has a 50th anniversary flight suit stashed away somewhere - not that he could fit in it 🙂

IMO this is the sort of expenditure that should have been chopped years ago, when Nhs and public sector was getting dry shafted, be interested to see if it keeps going as economy tanks.

You mean the Red Arrows or defence in general?

Defence is already shafted, just the same as every other Government department. We're way below operational capability on most fronts.

Red Arrows (and Parachute Display team, the rest of the stuff that turns up at airshows like the Typhoon and Chinook etc) are all operational pilots. Running the team is a drop in the ocean of defence spending but the general positive publicity from it outweighs the spending.

Something loud and fast went over here this morning but I missed it. Saw the C17 the other day when it was doing touch and go out of Manchester. There was a Voyager refuelling tanker on Flightrader heading north from Bronze Norton as well this morning.

The voyager flew pretty much over us this morning on the route out. Seems to have been busy.

[img] [/img]

Also noticed this sad beast (G-CIVN) just now on flightradar. Is it going to its grave, or are they parking them up at Kemble?

That's the third 747 going into Kemble this week. Five are due.

There were four Cobham Dassault Falcon flying in the same area as Voyager earlier today. Probably on the same training exercise.

Probably a exercise, they would be going PDQ if it was a shout.
The remote RADAR heads will be keeping a eye on things approaching our airspace.

More than half the kit in service is older than the people servicing it.

From local reports, practice landing at bhx for quite a few RAF planes getting ready for extension of NHS Nightingale and the other facilities being built at NEC and airport.

You mean the Red Arrows or defence in general?

Red arrows, display team, may be a drop, in the ocean but every little drop counts - maybe somebody serving could say whether the thought of the arrows cheers them up as they head to crappy below par accommodation on camp?.

The mode of UK defence needs a review, the idea of UK needing big aircraft carriers, nuclear deterrence and display teams and all that may be outmoded as we head into the post brexit torpor and lowly position internationally. Not sure when the strategic defence review is now due, but the chance of this government doing anything radical are pretty low though.

Not really sure what the point about it being old kit is, and I thought one of the routine arguments in favour was it helps showcase British industry - if they’re using past it’s sell by kit we are screwed!!!

Isn't the minimum operational ceiling 500ft? In which case he would have been at 500ft and 1 inch.

Somehow we keep managing to flog Hawks as jet trainers, so something must be working.

Edit: the voyager's just gone over the house, out to sea for another play.
